Center console cup holders

Hey lads,

Just got back from a road trip in Vic and both of the cup holders have broken (center console).

Do any other VWs have the same cup holders as 2017 tig 162?

I am keen on giving the repair a go but I have not found and aussie part as yet (could be looking at the wrong part)

Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome 🙏 🤗.

I saw in some older threads that the dealership would charge around $500. But if there are any DIY people out there comment below.

Slow response here, hope some of this info helps.

Same happened to me last year, both cupholders broke, there are little clips underneath that stop them over-opening (and popping off), and clips on the sides that hold them in the closed position. Both of mine snapped off, no idea how I managed to cause it (or how the previous owner may have worn them down), but VW refused to do it under warranty and said I must be shoving oversized drinks in there.

After some back and forth, they agreed to do it for cost of parts only. $700!

I called a few euro specialists who all said they literally couldn't be bothered with all the work needed to replace them. They said if the dealer was "only" charging $700, it was better to just go through the dealer.

After the fact, the dealership told me they absolutely hated doing it, apparently it was the first time they'd replaced the cup holders in a Tiguan and said it took them all day. (The entire center console needs to come out).

The cup holders are overengineered junk in my opinion. The Golf's old way of just having a divider (that doubled as a bottle opener!) is far superior.

I 3D printed a replacement for my T5 transporter … just put a couple of cylinders on the end of a bar that fits over the ashtray/cupholder contraption - will try to hunt down a picture. Not sure how the Tiguan set up works but I am sure someone could whip something up fo you.
