Disconnect battery before doing any work.

Don't take your key with you in the car and make sure you have all your tools with you so you don't have to open the door and get things. Otherwise disconnect the battery but if you do you still may well have fault codes to clear.

All the fault codes go away with a short drive.

Ask them if they think a reasonable person would expect the engine stop/start button to fail at this stage of the vehicle's life, because that's the test that the ACCC will apply when they assess a warranty claim under Australian consumer law.

The dealers can't do anything as they're not the ones paying and will just pass the buck down the line. I did finally manage to get a commitment from VW customer care, however that was only for partial cover. So I was still going to be out of pocket.

The dealer on the other hand told me that they would have to do an inspection and then submit a report. If it came back that VW weren't going to cover it then I'd be up for the bill on the inspection fee at $200/hour. Plus the cost of the part and labour to install.

So I then contacted VW to ask them if they were going to cover it and eventually after explaining to the customer care person that I wanted to get a commitment to their position before I went any further they said they would partly cover it. I don't know whether that was 10% or 90% as I didn't push any further - just decided to clean the switch and see how it goes. So far so good.

That's not how consumer law in Australia works. What they're doing is contrary to the consumer protection laws in Australia - they just count on the fact that the majority of people don't know their rights, or won't stand up for them.

I pulled my switch out today and cleaned the contacts. Works 100% now.

Here's a quick guide:

1) Remove the gear lever trim by using a trim tool. Start at the top as there's clips at the base.

2) Undo 2 x T20 Torx

3) Remove surrounding trim

4) Disconnect start/stop wiring. You'll need to insert a small screw driver to disengage the locking tab. Next pull out the silver spring clips. Careful as they'll spring out and go where you don't want them to.

5) There's 4 little clips that need to get disengaged to open up the button. One is hiding under the sticker:

6) Get a cotton tip and some isopropyl alcohol to clean the contacts. Reverse the process to put everything back together.

Worked straight away after a quick clean although I also didn't notice and dirt/dust etc.
Can also attest that you need to be careful with the silver clips holding the button in place.
Lost one, but the one remaining still holds it in place.

I tried this too - and works great. One tip though - the reverse order is NOT the same as disassembly - I put the switch in and tried to slide in the silver clips up from underneath (reverse of how I got them out).

However, what you actually need to do is put the silver clips back on the sides while the button is out of the car, and then drop the button in from the front face, and it will lock in place.

Also, I cleaned the blue contacts in the rubbery/silicone bit as well. seems to have worked well.

Unfortunately, I seem to have broken some of the clips on the 'surround' part - so take care pulling that bit out.

This really works well - starts and stops first time every time now. Sooooo much better

Although, it's only 4 years old, and you *shouldn't* have to do this (I guess I could have taken it back and had it fixed under warranty, but this seemed so much easier).

Thanks for posting guys, worked well form me. Thanks to @tigger73 for the great pics. A bit tricky pulling the switch apart but be patient. Used a couple of small screwdrivers to wedge between the tab and clip while working on the others. Also, put a hand towel around the gear shifter after removing the trims to prevent losing any bits in the abyss.
