  • Installation of Door Warning Lights for Mk2 Tiguan (DIY)

I recently installed a set of 4 door warning lights on my 2017 Tiguan Sportline (Highline). It was a little different to some of the other write-ups I've seen so will post here so it may help others looking to do this mod in the future.

This is the kit that I bought which included wires, housings and LED globes: RWSYPL LED Car Door Warning Light + Cable Plug Harness For VW Jetta MK5 Golf 5 6 7 Passat B6 B7 Tiguan Superb EOS CC 3AD 947 411|Signal Lamp| - AliExpress

The lights in this kit are OK, however the wires for the front doors are too short. I'm not sure if other kits have longer wires but I needed to add some extra length to these to fit well (have some slack so that you can undo the plugs when removing the door trims). Also be mindful that the wires in this kit have 2 different types of pin connectors on the ends. You'll need to make sure you use the correct one on the rear doors where you need to install one of the pins into the connector. Probably not a bad idea to start with the rear doors and/or if you chop off the pins leave a "tail" on it so you can use them later if required.

    Front doors:

First you need to undo 3 bolts holding on the door trims. There's one M30 torx in the middle of the door and one underneath the door handle cover. Remove the cover with a pry tool. There's a small recess at the rear of the handle to start the pry tool. Also one plastic 10mm "wing nut" at the bottom of the door. Get a 10mm spanner and turn it 90 degrees so the tabs are vertical and no longer locking the trim in place.

Get a trim removal tool behind the door cover and pry the door trim off the clips holding it on. Once the clips are undone, lift up off the top of the door/seating near the glass and carefully undo all the connectors between the door and door trim.

Remove the quad-lock connector from the front door controller module. Remove the blue housing from the outside of the connector to access the wires inside. You may have to cut off a zip tie from around the end first (if there's one on there).

Next you want to connect the wires for your door warning lights into the wiring that is already in the harness. Pin 5 = ground/brown wire, Pin 16 = +12V / red wire. There's a number of different ways to do this but I soldered these rather than using connectors. I also had to extend the wires that were supplied in the kit around 15-20cm to give some "slack" and allow me to route the wires along the other existing wiring harness. Make sure you tape up any bare wires/connections and then put the connector back together.

Put the door back together, leaving the cable out the hole for the door warning light. Lastly install the light and test. You may want to test the light first before putting the door car back on fully just to make sure it is operating correctly. Given that you're cutting into existing wires you likely won't need to do any coding here. If it doesn't work try turning the ignition on as one time I needed to do this as I think I disconnected some of the door wiring before the car switched "off" and the door control module got it's knickers in a knot.

    Rear doors:

This is where there's quite a difference to some of the other write-ups as many of the other write-ups online indicate that there is no rear door controller module and you need to cut into some of the other wires and use them as an alternative signal to run the door warning lights. As it turns out the Tiguan (Highline model at least) has rear door controller module fitted so you can instead wire the lights up directly to the module and enable using VCDS/OBD11.

Rear door trim removal is similar to the front door, however the tricky thing is the 10mm "wing nut" is hidden underneath the "reflector".

Connections are Pin 12 for +12V (red wire) and Pin 13 for GND (brown wire). You will need to use one of the pinned wires to fit into the connector (pin 12) as pin 13 (GND) already has a wire in it that you'll need to splice into.

When fitting the light into the door you'll need to modify the plastic moulding to allow the rear of the light and connector to fit.

And last is to enable the lights with VCDS. Byte 1 Bit 2 needs to be enabled. There's no long coding helper with these - just have to trust that it works

Finally suggest testing before putting everything back together:

Looks good. How much drilling is required to remove the plastic in the rear plastic moulding?

You actually need to remove quite a bit of material. That's why I had the spade bit out. It actually depends on the light housing but all mine were the same moulding (not for left and right sides). You will only need to remove the material on one side in this case as on one side it will fit and on the other side it'll hit the back of the door panel.

If you do the mod you'll figure it out but just be ready to cut out some of the plastic internals of the door. When you're doing it be careful not to damage the part that the light clips into and just remove the material at the back.

Just a question Are the plug sockets at the same end on all 4 of them or are two opposite
If you got this set would it fit without mangling the door

On the set I got all 4 had the same housing. I.e. the connector was it the same location and there wasn’t a left and right side with the location flipped.

Hence why I only had to modify one of the rear door cards to get the light to fit. It’s not a massive issue as it’s internal to the door so you’re never going to see it. Just another step to get the light housing to fit.

I suspect many of the sets being sold would be single moulding only.

What i wanted to know is if the socket is in the middle of the fitting does it need cutting to fit it.

Another way to cut it is to use a soldering iron and just melt it along a line and use heatshrink on the soldered joins.
Spade bit ???? edge of a standard bit works and doesnt shake around

Socket is on one end. Yes and I should get some heatshrink for these types of jobs... Probably should have got my file out and cleaned it up but nobody else is going to see it except for the whole internet

                  LOL

I have been looking at some which have socket centred and hopefully they will fit as they are quite a bit cheaper than yours and I really only need two as hardly never have passengers in the back

Well if you're putting them in the front I didn't have to do any modifications. It was only the backs that I needed to modify the door cards slightly to clear the connector.

Have just done mine front door went exactly as Tigger says and light comes on every time you open door.

I lengthened the wires and ran them through a plastic tube up to the module Sticky taped tubing to door skin to stop vibrations.

Some of the clips holding the skin came off the skin instead of the door so had to pry them out and fit them to the skin and work the outside up to be in right order to refit them.
                      All good

Wish VW thought up a simpler way to make connectors though

Rear right door Same problem with locating plugs but some of the connectors were designed by the devil

Got it apart and connected the wires to the module plug

I bought lights with the connector in the centre of the back and dont have to cut so much of the housing out. Just drilled a 1/4 in hole in top of housing for the wires to exit.

                      4Pcs Car LED Door Warning Light Welcome Projector for Golf 6 7 Jetta MK5 MK6 Passat B6 B7 CC TIGUAN Scirocco|Decorative Lamp| - AliExpress

Got it all connected and even with 11 volts present the light wont come on Spent 2 hours and gave up

On reading Tiggers instructions I failed to enable the bit at the finish so for those using OBDEleven go to each of the rear doors modules and enable the byte and bit in Door Exit light as on looking it is enabled in the front doors but not the rears.

Redid it today and it works fine Seems it was the Jaycar connector and too much solder was misalignng it in the housing. Also had to cut a bit out of the doorcard housing as it was about 3mm too tight.

Remember in the rears to put longer wires in as you cant fit the light until you have tightened up the bolt in behind it. I made some longer wires and dangled the light below its hole and tightened the bolt then clipped it in afterwards

Connectors from Jaycar fit these if you damage any like I did Pt no HP 1260 $4.95 for 25 VW want $44 for a bit of wire with a socket on each end

Follow up to the above Got sent the lights to finish the job and was much easier the second time apart from the plug to the electric window switch.

Didnt have to cut the left rear housing and al fitted up and worked first time.

Now looking at getting one for the taildoor but the light housing is slightly different and will need a bit of cutting clips to get it to fit I reckon they are great but wife looked and I thought she had swallowed a lemon LOL

It's funny that the tail door already has a light in it but there's only a white light down and a red "reflector" going backwards. As long as you're not putting in the VW logo lights you should be fine

Old one was a problem getting it out as has spring clip on other end and it had to be bent right back to get it out as couldnt get a screwdriver in to lever it inward to lift that end out
