  • All Terrain Tyre options for latest Tiguan (2018 Wolfsburg Edition)

    Hi Team,
I got a new Tiguan Wolfsburg Edition just before Christmas and it comes with the 20" wheels.
Since I am still driving on national park dirt roads on a regular basis I wanted to find some either genuine or aftermarket rims on to which I can put some All Terrain tyres. Just a second wheel set basically for occasional off road trips.
I wanted to ask what others with the same year model have come up with because the tyre shops give me mixed messages.
One said there are hardly any aftermarket wheels that fit a VW Tiguan and I'm best to buy some 18" genuine wheels from VW for which there are a few AT tyre options. Another tyre shop said there are barely any decent AT tyre options for 18" and I should go to 16" rims. VW said they don't have any 16" rims for this car as they may not even clear the brake callipers and the offset might not be right either.

So basically it seems I can't fit any decent AT tyres on my car at all, which I find very hard to believe.

Wondering what others with a similar year model have done, surely there are some options out there?
    Thanks in advance
    Thomas

Look in this thread 17" Tiguan wheels for 2018 R-Line

There should be plenty of 17” AT tyres which fit.

General Grabber AT3 is available in 235/55R18 (stock tyre size for the Comfortline 18" wheels)

If you go to a 17" wheel, then 235/65R17 is a very popular size with plenty of AT tyres available.

        I have 17’s with 225/65 tyres (pirelli scorpion at+)

215/65/17 is the factory tyre size at 17, but I wanted a bit more diameter for speedo correction and a smidge more clearance.

Go the 17” for sure. Are the Tiguan wheels 5x112 or 5x120 like the T5 and amarok?

          245/65R17 BFG KO2 - $248

245/65R17 Yoko GO15 -$258 (I highly rate these) great wear and good off-road capability without epic levels of road noise.

I’d look at Cooper Tires and BF Goodrich. I currently have Coopers on my wife’s gen1 Tiguan and done almost 50,000km with plenty of tread remaining.

I prefer the Coopers to BFGs.
BFGs I found were less grippy in the wet and a bit noisier

                Tiguan is 5x112.

I'd suggest looking at Audi wheels in offsets around 35-40 if you can't find any VW wheels to suit (Passat, Scirocco will also fit Tiguan OK).

I've bought wheels from a wrecker or you can find plenty on gumtree/Facebook marketplace as well as spare parts here.

As an FYI for everyone, putting larger diameter tyres on any car can put extra stress on all driveline components.

It’s a similar effect to riding a push bike in the high gears uphill- eventually you’re knees and muscles get knackered...

However putting smaller rims with higher profile tyres doesnt change much as the overall diameter is almost identical It was said earlier in the linked thread that the 17s with higher profile are about 2% larger, which surprised me but that is acceptable.. Much more than that wouldnt be

For Nsw the ruling is no more or less than 7%

We’re not talking extreme lifts here, just more compliant tyres for off-road use. The car has 20” 40 profile which would be horrible on rough roads and more susceptible to damage. 17” 65 profile is gonna add a lot more cushion and the right tread and sidewall thickness will add security for punctures.

Agreed, but I hope everyone realises that the profile is a percentage of tread width. So 65% of 215mm is less than 65% of 245mm. About 20mm difference on each side of the tyre, so approx 40mm total. That’s not a small amount(maybe still legal though- if 7% is the rule)

The 7% applies to the diameter compared the OEM tyre. Width doesn’t come into it regarding the ruling however width is a factor in the overall diameter measurement. So as long as your overall is under 7% smaller or larger than a placarded OEM rim and tyre combo your sweet. (Rubbing is a separate issue however and must still be checked.

In QLD the Tiguan can have tyres 15mm LARGER Diameter or 26 mm SMALLER diameter.

An MC category vehicle like a Landcruiser etc can have tyres up to 50mm large diameter or 26 smaller diameter

A Tiguan is classed as an AWD softoader and is NOT an MC category vehicle

                            Overall Nominal Diameter

The overall diameter of any tyre fitted to a passenger car or passenger car derivative must not be more than 15mm larger or 26mm smaller than that of any tyre designated by the vehicle manufacturer for that model.

Well that changes the game a bit. 711mm is the diameter of the 255/40r20

225/65 R17 will get in just under the 15mm increase.

Yokohama have a GO15 in that size.

Kumho AT51 also in that size.

Cooper has the ATT in that size

                              Or the AT3 in 235/60r17
