Announcement

Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • New 2019 Tiguan Fails Autonomous Emergency Braking Tests (30km/h and 50km/h)

    What a disgrace

"The Tiguan proves an enigma. It fails its first 30km/h run by completely ignoring the target, though on its second attempt, it sparks the collision warning and partially brakes … but still collides. A third attempt sees no response at 30km/h, however a final retest later in the day sees it stop before impact, but only at 30km/h."

      Settle down fanboy

More like VW need to update their defective hardware / software and get their tech working right

Being out-tech by Subaru ... says it all

Sounds like you should apply for the role of head engineer in Wolfsburg.

Or General Manager of Volkswagen Australia..

You clearly have a passion for everything wrong with the brand and are the only person who can fix it.

I’m sure that VW engineers done their testing and I’d have more faith in them than some bunch of journalist from drivedotcomdotau.

This is great for all those situations where a giant balloon jumps out in front of my car at 30kph

Ahhh the balloons ... look out !!!

The balloon has an ANCAP logo so I assume it was used for ANCAP testing

Is ANCAP testing now rubbish as well ?

Many problems have been reported by owners, mostly in the UK and Europe surrounding this system and false emergency stops and there is at least one legal case in the UK over it unless that has been settled. I am surprised this has taken so long to be raised in the media TTTT. The first one is the one I am think of, it got a very long thread in the Pommy Tiguan forum

The balloon is great for optical systems, however for radar it's problematic as it's 99% air and only some whispy fabric to pick up.

I think you'd find a different result with a "proper" solid object. Even cardboard boxes would have provided the radar based systems a "fairer" test. I find it strange that the article doesn't mention the different methods for active collision avoidance.

Of course the Subaru is at a significant advantage on this test with a massive target. The VW is at a massive disadvantage as the target is almost non-existent.

My car has already not sensed a car that I very nearly hit(dodged myself) but I admit I don’t know if it fits the systems criteria. I was doing 40-45, car pulled out of side street, across me and I dodged to the left and juuusssttt missed the rear of their car.

I also have lots of false rear brake activations, but- again, unsure if it’s a related tech.

They used an inflatable ‘car’. I wonder what it’s radar reflectivity is like? This is so far from a scientific test it’s ridiculous - so the results are not worth the time required to read them.

For visual-based system like the Subaru - great, works fine. For radar-based system which actually require a reflected radar return - doesn’t take a rocket surgeon to explain the reasoning for the inconsistent results across the range of vehicles tested.

edit: and I just realised that tigger said basically the same thing half an hour ago I was a bit late to the party It honestly doesn’t surprise me though when motoring ‘journalists’ do these kind of stunts because they are generally - from what I’ve read of their product over the last few years - technological dwarfs and ill-equipped with knowledge of the relevant technologies to conduct a genuinely scientific test - let alone comment on the results.

Any volunteers to stand in front of a Tiguan to prove that it operates the AEB reliably? Surely all those saying that the tests are a load of rubbish will all line up to give it a go.

I'm in team "I was driving cars before AEB" and never had an accident. Certainly not stupid enough to stand in front of a car to test it's autonomous braking feature
