So our Tig has been in and out of the dealership recently for some err.. electrical issues (dpf differential pressure sensor, memory buttons on the seat not working) and we were given a demo Allspace R-Line petrol as loaner.
It was nice to compare to our 140TDI as we kind of regretted getting a diesel after we took delivery. We ordered the car without a test drive as they were only just released and my partner wanted a car just like my then Passat TDI. So we thought it would be much the same, but we both agree it’s less efficient (5.8l/100 Passat - 6.7l/100 Tig) and it sounds so disappointingly agricultural compared to the old 125TDI!
But my misgivings have largely disappeared after sampling the apparently hot 162TSI R-Line. I drove it all the way home thinking it must have been a 132TSI, not so much because of a lack of power, but just that it felt a bit vanilla.
What I found more revealing was the difference in the build quality between the German built Tiguan and the Mexican built Allspace.
The column stalks had a less positive action, the soft touch plastics on the upper part of the dashboard and front door trims didn’t match the colour of the lower parts and the middle row seat had painfully obvious pvc plastic in the centre position instead of leather.
I also could not understand why they have ditched the hot keys and volume knob for the newer infotainment. The screen is beautifully crisp and clear, until you touch the fingerprint prone glass that is!
I did enjoy watching the dynamic light assist dance all over the road - something I will have to code into ours me thinks.
The R-Line interior without a sunroof is dark place to be, I’m not a fan of the black headliner. But then my other cars are all cream or grey interior so maybe I’m just not used to it [emoji12]
The Dynaudio is worth it’s weight in gold. I adjusted the settings so the next person to test drive it might actually notice the difference!
These few little things sound completely trivial and pointless - and I admit they are. But it’s not every day you get to compare two very similar cars like this. Especially here in Tassie where a dealership is unlikely to have even half the models available to test before you order.
Our lease is up in less than 12 months and we were considering the Allspace for the extra cargo area but we both agree it’s not the be all end all. It didn’t seem appreciably bigger to us, which helps my agenda of reverting back to the Passat wagon! [emoji12]
Anyway, here is a pic of the oddly coloured black trim and cheap looking plastics.
