Number plate fixing

I have a standard sized number plate on my tig and the dealer has screwed through the front number plate holder into the front bumper. Is this normal or what is the standard fixing method?

I don't have that problem, but the foam strip glued to the back of mine is peeling.

That's what I did with mine. I have Euro size plates that are a perfect fit.

If you don't screw through the bumper I wouldn't trust it.

It's normal. It's not necessarily the best way to do it. But most people won't care.

I've had a new car where they used 8mm tech screws and the plate was crooked and they had used two different plate holes. Wasn't a happy camper and didn't accept the vehicle until it was sorted.

I always ask that they do not fit the number plates now. I'd rather fit them myself. Spewing that Lakin isn't doing their mounts anymore. Not sure how I'm going to mount my Euros to the Tiggy when it gets here.

On my Alltrack the rears were already Euro standard metal thread so I just used some security Torx screws as I have the Euro plates. Fronts I just drilled myself through the bumper. The dealer was happy for me to do it.

Thanks for the replies. I have seen how you can remove the front number plate holder by pushing in the centre of the plastic fasteners. Does anyone know what this leaves behind in the holes and can you screw into them with a different euro plate holder?

What fasteners would you need because removing the existing ones appears to destroy them?

Yes removing the existing plate holder will leave holes in the bumper which you can either cover/fill/fit plugs.

You can then screw the plate direct to the front bumper, however if the dealer has used long screws likely they've gone through the plate holder and into the bumper anyway so you can just fix your plate to the existing screw holes in the bumper and then cover up the holes left from the mount.

There are 5 x 8mm holes in the front bumper used to mount the ugly black plastic plate mount on the front that only a Euro Plate would cover The rear is no problem for any plate, just clean off the black goopy foam stuff.

I've seen some shocker rear plate mounts. Screws straight through the middle of numbers or plates sitting really low so holes lined up.

Some cars don't get the black foam either.

I've gone with normal size euro front and back to fill the space.

Has anyone had any luck removing the black foam glued under their rear number plate? It's now fraying badly where it isn't covered by the number plate, but I don't want to remove it only to discover things look much worse.
