That’s my opinion.

Not completely take them off the car cause that means bleeding brakes and etc but I’ll be taking out the pads and smoothing out the calliper so there’s none of that rough texture on them. They will look smooth and glossy. A little bit of work but will definitely be worth it. It’s not hard to do. But I’ll take pictures when I do them.

After a few exchanges with Josh from Outwest Creations Detailing, apparently he uses the High Temperature enamel paint cans from VHT or Dupli Color. Is the paint trust worthy?
Any advise if he is good and of the paint products?
Some examples of his work:

Worst is the VHT clear coat which doesn’t seem to set hard (or may actually need baking in an oven). But brake dust gets embedded in the clear coat and you can’t clean it off. The only thing you can do is use thinners/alcohol to remove the clear coat completely.
You’re much better off using a good 2 pack paint with hardener such as the Foliatec paint I posted up earlier.

My personal favourite is Pro-rack whispbar as they are aero and look good enough to leave on permanently. Though they only run between the roof rails and don't extend further out which can make tying down a bit harder.

If you don’t have them you could improvise with other tools. But it’s really not hard. If you have changed brake pads in the past you can most definitely paint your own brakes. I wouldn’t use vht. Vht is like an acrylic and it only dries by the solvents mixed with evaporating leaving paint behind. The beauty of a two pack system is that it’s two parts. It’s normally a ratio of 4-1 depending on brand. You have the paint and than you put in a catalyst to make it go rock hard. This gives is a beautiful gloss and a hard surface that brake dust won’t stick to. All these high heat products on the market are just a rip off. We would never get our brakes that hot that we would need such type of paint. It’s just grate marketing. If your in Sydney let me know I’ll do it for 200 cause that’s the cost of a compressor at Bunnings that would do for the job. And you can come over and I can teach you how it’s done.

Im also enquiring with provinyl.com.au who does powder coating for the brake calipers. Is powder coating just as good as 2 pac paint? They charge $920 for respray of calipers but checking if it’s powder coating or not...
Also, is it possible to only change the calipers and keep the brake pads or both have to be replaced if I fit new calipers (eg new Brembo ones)?

This will be perfect with a k&n air filter. And being a turbo it will have a little more response and fuel savings which is a plus. I think vw blocks them off because they make a little bit of noise when under load. But I like the noise of the turbo. So yeah it’s good.
im half way with cutting them out I’ll take more pics when im finished chopping these out so it makes more cense

I’d be interested in what tools you use to remove the textured finish. This is what they look like when you paint over the brakes with the casting finish:
There’s a slight ripple in the paint. This is 12 months on using the Foliatec 2 part brush on paint kit which sets rock hard like enamel.
It looks great and brake dust washes off easily.

That painted caliper looks great! Is that on a Golf R? The texture of the paint looks quite smooth.
For the foliatec paint, is it only one application of paint? Is it easy to mask the calipers and using a brush to hand paint? I would of though spray cans would cover the gaps much better?

Spoke with ProVinyl (Artarmon, Sydney) and they charge $660 plus GST to paint all 4 calipers. Their process is:
1. Clean and sand the calipers for a smooth texture
2. 2x coats of caliper paint (cans - he didn’t say which product they use)
3. 1x clear coat
Is it worth the money?
