  • Tiguan sunroof shade

    Hi All!

For those of you that have Tiguans with sunroofs could I ask whether you found the shade (which is semi-transparent) was good enough at keeping out the sun and heat (particularly in summer) compared to a traditional shade? I’m in two minds about getting a sunroof because I don’t want the car to boil!!!

    Thanks!
    Nick

Personally speaking, we had no issues at all... I think it does the job well, i have a similar setup in my car and it also does a good job ...

I’m melb based so we don’t get the extreme heat and sun rays like other parts of AU....

We are in QLD and have no issues with heat other than what it would normally be like leaving your car parked in the sun.

Hi Nick, have a look at the link below, it will give you some feedback on sun roof use.

Thanks so much! Silly question - I know the sunroof obviously raises up from the car when open, but when shut is it any higher than a non-sunroof Tiguan?

no...it's pretty much the same height on the exterior. It will impact if you are using roof bars though - factory bars allow for the roof being open while the 3rd party low profile bars may not allow enough for clearance. The other issue is that adding panoramic roof will reduce the interior headroom - best to test drive one to make sure it suits.

I think you'd have to be really tall for it to be a problem in the Tiguan, but as you say, try before you buy.

I don't know if its the sunroof problem or the A/C but we think it's really hard to cool down the car during hot summer days. I won't get it with sunroof next time.

Hi Sharp and while our A/C seem to work fine before I covered the front Sunroof glass panel.

But once just the front glass panel was covered, the A/C works much better and gets the interior cooler much quicker.

I still have not had the time to workout how to remove the rear glass panel so I can cover it, but there is a 3 degree difference between the front and rear glass on the underside on the hottest days.

The interior is also much darker on bright sunny days.

                    Cool! (literally)

                    What did you cover with?

Hi Sharp and sorry for the delay in replying but I was trying to locate my invoice.

Can’t find it but I used a selfadhisive vinyl sheet designed for external use.

I used black vinyl and it comes in Flat, Satin and Gloss finish.

I made the mistake of using satin but while it looks OK, the Gloss finish would have looked more like the what the glass looks like and would probably be slightly cooler than the Satin finish.

Had our Tig, 132 tsi comfortline, for 4 months & still learning a lot.

Found that when sitting in the back seat on a hot day the head got a bit warm from the sunroof - even with the inner cover closed. So, measured my reflective sun screen for the front windscreen & found that it was about one mil smaller on each side & the length was ok, so carefully inserted it between the glass & the internal cover then slowly closed the inner cover.

Perfect, with the reflective side facing up the difference in temp is about 5c.

Will keep an eye on it over time to make sure there is no problem & may replace it with a newer one if necessary.

Strangely I have never seen a Tiguan on the road with the sunroof open and I have got to ask why? The same reason as soft top cars are not driven around with the top down in Oz, the sun is just too damned hot. I have had both and would not buy either again for that reason alone.

We drive with ours open regularly, I’m glad we optioned it. I don’t find the car is any hotter due to it. The car gets hot no matter what if you are parked in the summer sun..

Try to put on a heat reflecting tint. I have this on my windows and I can feel the difference in heat between my windows and front windscreen. Before it was not recommended to tint a sunroof due to cracking, but these latest tints can be applied without any issue.

By the way, I have my sunroof shade closed on hot days and it helps a lot to keep the car cooler. Plus before getting into the car it is recommended to open all the windows with your key fob and let the fresh air in for a minute.
