  • Do I need snow chains with Tiguan 4motion

Hi, I am bit confused re snow chains.

We are planning to visit Selwyn this weekend and the requirement for NSW parks is snow chains for cars except 4WD or AWD.

Setting aside safety Tiguan 4motion is 4WD on need basis. Am I legally covered not to take the snow chains and will Tiguan be considered 4WD?

For NSW, you do not legally require snow chains on that vehicle.
    Cheers

Is 4motion AWD or 4WD, if I'm stopped by the ranger?

There is also another thread on snow chains that provides some info about that topic. Unless you have 17” wheels I don’t think it is possible to fit them...

I believe 4motion is AWD, not 100% sure though

AWD but either is fine in NSW

In snow you’d be a lot more sure-footed in a 2WD car with chains than a Tiggy without IMO so if it’s snowy take it very easy

No, you don't need chains with 4motion models.
Just came back from a week in Perisher. We had a lot of snow on the road coming in and the ranger waived me through the chain bay when I stated it was 4wd.

Quoted for truth, so many vehicles I see each year off the road at perisher are 4wd’s. Range rovers, Subaru’s, even the odd land cruiser. 4wd or AWD is not an excuse to not drive to the conditions. I took chains for my Passat with AT snow tires. You just never know when chains can mean the difference between self recovery or towing!

Very true, better safe then sorry! Its always good to be prepared for the worst, even if for assisting others.

Coming back to a VW soon but I thought I'd chime in.
In winter 2019 Perisher ski season, I was driving at 10pm towards Guthega. Road was covered in pure ice. My Volvo XC60 just slipped across the road and I was just able to pull to the side of the road. As I got out of the car, the wind was crazy and I started sliding away from the car! I grabbed the door before I slipped too far down the road.
I was able to put snow chains onto the wheels, in the blizzard conditions. I was able to get going again. Front wheels gripped but I could feel the rear wheels slip.
When I got to Guthega road itself, in the first steep section, around 5x big 4x4 vehicles had stopped, as they were trying to rescue a ditched Ford Rapter. Talked to them and none had chains and were all slipping on the ice. They were contemplating what to do.
Point of this story...when you hit raw ice only chains will do. Compressed snow has got some nice grip but when it is too compressed, it is like ice. Never brake hard, downshift instead.
Last winter I saw too many big 4x4 in the ditch because people think 4x4 will do everything. Nothing beats commonsense physics.

Can we use snow chain on Tiguan 162 R line? I was reading somewhere that R line has 20" tyres and chains cannot be used, when to use snow mode?

Yeah, I think the options were very very limited for the 20" wheels

Theres a thread on here about it

                          EDIT:

I use Volvo's own 'spider' snow chains. These were rebadged RUD Centrex V. Thule-Konig also makes similar ones. RUD has the sizes https://www.rud.com/fileadmin/user_u...e_CentraxV.pdf

They are designed to literally hug the tyre surface and are designed for vehicles that do not have enough clearance on the backside of the wheels where the brake lines are. Many cars such as the Volvo XC60 and others (more modern cars) do not have enough clearance on the backside of the tyres, and these are great.

These chains are accepted everywhere (with the exception of Mt Hotham) because Hotham is "unique".

When mounted on and used correctly, the work great. Like with any snow chains do not exceed 50kph (or whatever is rated for the chain).

You'll need to go searching on Google to buy (sometimes cheaper to buy from overseas as Aus stock is limited).

The thread posted above has all the info - but it is stated in the manual that we can’t fit chains to the 20” suzuka rims. Experience shows otherwise, but I’ll let you draw your own conclusions
