  • 110TSI Comfortline fuel economy

This review : 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan extended road test review - Living with our Car of the Year

is reporting when they tested the car in city and suburbs drives the trip computer had the 110TSI drinking 10.1L/100km. Which is noticeably above the claimed urban consumption rating of 7.6L/100km.'

It also reports " managing to get over 400km for the tank (58L) even with all my urban driving." This is not making sense to me as 10.1L/100km in a 58L tank should return >500km/tank , right ?

I wonder what is the rest of 110TSI owners getting? Thanks!
( looking to buy a Tiguan with good fuel economy and I know the figure will only get worse as I move up to other power output)

If it helps, I have the 162tsi and get around 9-10L/100km in sport and 8-8.5L/100km in normal/ comfort.

Thank you twyat1, that sounds good . Does it mean you are getting about 650-700km in a tank in normal / comfort mode? I assume this is mainly highway mileage right?

I agree diesel is very good for fuel economy but this car will be driven mainly for short trips ( e.g. 10 min to the shop and back ) and thus not too sure if a VW diesel engine will be happy with this long term

Can confirm I drive in sport with my 162tsi and get an average of 500km per tank with 100km left on the gauge when I refill.

We have a 110tsi golf and my wife gets about 700-800km per tank on that.

If you want to buy a 110TSI Tiguan you'll have to do it shortly as this model /engine has been discontinued in MY19 (arriving in September). It will depend on what stock is left in the country as likely there won't be much new stock of 110TSI cars arriving now.

The 110TSI should return better fuel economy (given same driving style) as it is FWD only and around 200kg lighter compared to the 132TSI/162TSI. Also it's likely that the reviewer in the article was given a new(ish) car and it can take several thousand km (as high as 5,000-10,000km) to fully bed in the engine and get close to the "normal" ongoing fuel consumption figures.

Finally it's hard to compare the 110TSI in a Golf to the Tiguan as although they are the same engine again it's different weight vehicle and the aero dag in the Tig will be higher.

My experience is that driving style (and terrain) has probably larger impact on fuel consumption than engine. This was also proven on a Top Gear episode comparing consumption of a Prius vs M5 driven around a tack at the same speed(not very scientific I know but proves a point).

My advice is to buy the car that suits your use and makes you happy.

Thanks Tigger73, what is your thinking bout the reason VW discontinue the 110tsi in MY19?

I am almost sure it is to do with the issues they are having at the factory with complying with the new WLTP testing regulations (What is WLTP: the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure? | WLTPfacts.eu).

This is causing major headaches for a number of European manufacturers. It is possible that the 110TSI will come back, however from around September you'll only be able to purchase a 132TSI or 162TSI Tiguan (or whatever old stock of 110TSI/110TDI/140TDI is still available).

There's quite a few articles about this and estimates say it is going to effect production of 250,000 cars:
VW will shut down production at main German plant in switch to WLTP emissions testing

VW says 250,000 cars could be delayed by new testing rules | Reuters

                            Just my 2 cents worth.
Have been driving my 110TSI Tiguan Comfortline with DAP for 7 month now.
1 long trip from Adelaide to Melbourne and back recently but apart from that I drive 80% locally at 60 km/h and the occasional 90km/h.
I have found 60-70km/h to be the best however 90 and under still shows extremely good economy.
I reset my counters at EVERY FUEL FILL and I always try to fill the tank near empty, that is I usually put in atleast 50-55 litres and have also put in 60 litres on one occasion.
The worst mileage I got per tank was 740km, the best I achieved was around 870km.
From previous experience I found shell to be equal best with Caltex, However since new I have always used Caltex vortex95 in the Tiguan, until recently where I have tried 1 tank mobil 98 and 1 tank BP 98. Did NOT noticed anything special with these. Finally I decided to try Caltex 98 and I am still driving with half a tank on this. Most likely will see close to 900km I think. In any case I think I will stick to Caltex95 unless this Caltex 98 can justify itself.
Long trip to VIC and back at 110km/h and the occasional instant short bursts revealed that this engine is not designed for speed, it isnt economical (above 110km/h) and doesn't have any power if your looking for it. However in normal city traffic it does the job well. If your priority is economy and not so much power then its for you, otherwise it will disappoint. (However 2nd gear really impresses me).
Locally 7.1 is normal driving, and anything under that (6.1 onward) is mixed driving, I try to drive economically most of the time. (let the car roll to a stop when approaching lights etc.).
                            This is Just my experience.
                            I'm a happy camper.
