  • Car Dealer's or Detailer's Ceramic Coating?

I know this has been discussed before everywhere but I am still on the fence about which ceramic coating to get.

At the moment, the "Ming Mole" from my car dealer offered me the following: Hydro (Motor One) ceramic coating including leather seat protection and front window tinting = $1,700.

Then I got a quote from Afinesse (detailer in Melbourne) for the following: Opticoat Pro Plus ceramic coating $1095, leather seat protection $250, wheels protection $150, front window tinting $250 TOTAL = $1,745.

So which one do you guys think I should get, keeping in mind that with the dealer I can have peace of mind knowing that they can rectify any mistakes easily during the process and it would also be more convenient for me to chase them up in the future. Afinesse though has really good reviews and they do mostly high end Euro cars. Also, Motor One has terrible reviews unlike Opticoat Pro.

    Any help is appreciated.

This is a no brainer.... Im yet to have seen a dealer supplied paint protection actually corrected before application... a quick wash, a wipe down with alcohol and the paint protection applied.
    Go the detailer

Dealers make he's money with extras like this which cost them peanuts but charge you a fortune, proper detailer will always do a better job.

That's what I was afraid of. The detailer also has a breakdown of their process starting with purification (clay bar treatment) which I thought the dealer will not even bother with.

Go with a detailer for sure i was quoted $1000 for paint protection on my car i shopped around and could get the same done for less than 300 bucks its all a mark up for the dealer

As for what coating there is a can of worms lol i chose pomponazzi for mine its a ceramic/glass coat i have had it on my car for nearly a year and to get a freshly waxed look that looks like i spent 4+ hours claybar and waxing the car all i do is give it a quick 15min handwash
and i can shave in the reflection from the paint
Your in melbourne check out dans detailing he is very good and will do a golf hatch for $1700 in pomp (way better than opticoat imo)

Check the pomponazzi thread in the detailing section page 7 i think eyes24 got his tig done with dan (i would have to but time constrains meant i had to go elsewhere) and he has a good deal if you mention that thread to dan

But whatever you go with it will be way better than the crap the dealer sprays on
don't forget to get a paint correction as well

Good luck let us know how you go
Post some picks in the pomp thread so people can compare and we can go ohh aahhh lol

That looks sleek but cheap as chips! I do prefer a professional doing it though and like the longer lasting ones as I don't trust myself with DYIs hehe. Btw your garage is GINORMOUS!

I bought the CQuatrz for my Scirocco and I think for the $ spent its worth it. I don't mind spending some time to prepare the car and apply the product. It's not that hard and for me it's about protecting the paint for the odd bird dropping so you don't damage your clear coat.

If you can afford it and want the best then go for one of the professional detailer options (Pomponazzi, Opti-Coat, Nova Pro, etc). Generally you'll be paying for the surface preparation as the coating will only look as good as the surface it's applied to.

If you get the paint protection at a dealer you're only paying for someone else to get the CQuartz bottle and put it on your car for you. So save yourself $500 and DIY. It's actually really easy. Just make sure you do it out of direct sun on a cool car and you'll be fine.

Was really easy - you don't need to do the whole polish etc to remove swirl marks if the car is new..just a quick wash / spray and wipe with the IPA bottle - then apply - took me about 4 hours..just get the tunes cranking and some beers and it fly's by..and yes having a huge SHED to work in helps..haha

Just an update. I have rang the dealer and asked to remove the paint protect from the contract. The Ming Mole was very aggressive with trying to convince me back into having it done with them but I was firm and made it clear that my mind is made up. She wasn't too happy about it lol. I have decided to go with a detailer and have Pomponazzi 880XX. They will also do the interiors, glass, and wheels for the same price as what the dealer quoted me for. Thanks guys for all the help.

When I was picking up my Tig and waiting in one of the dealers offices I could hear the accessories lady in the office next door trying to convince someone that had just bought a Amarok to go with the full body, wheel etc. protection. Sounded like she was reading from a script with no idea of what she was actually saying.. She ended the speel by saying if she had bough this car she would not hesitate in doing the protection.... I was laughing so hard... The Amarok guy didn't get do with this BS and lady got quite mad, she must get a commission of each one she convinces people to get.

The accessories lady did not get a chance to give me the same speech as I told the salesmen who I did the deal with that part of me signing the contract was that I would not have to get the speech....
