Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Started down the modifications road...

With the car coming up for 2 years old soon, and since I decided not to pull the trigger on a new R to replace it with, thought I would commence a series of modifications instead Just up the enjoyment factor a little more... I've been known to move on from a vehicle in as little as a couple of months if I don't gel with it, and 2 years is probably my long term average over the last 30 or so years - so deciding to keep the blue roller-skate is quite a big call on my part. Maybe I'm just getting old and docile....

I have installed a new turbo inlet elbow, turbo muffler delete, and waiting on a MAF adapter to arrive so I can install an APR open intake. That should pair nicely with the APR Stage 1+ ECU tune I had installed just over a week ago. The turbo muffler delete doesn't do anything much, but I was in that area of the engine bay so swapped it out. The price of CTS parts made it a no-brainer too...

VW quote 7.2 seconds for the 0-100km/h time as a standard vehicle. Mine's now running at 5.9 seconds and has loads more mid-range oomph. Much nicer for overtaking on the highway etc. And that is without using launch control, which would likely shave another tenth off. Now it drives like a spritely GTi - quick enough to entertain, but not silly.

Next on the agenda is the APR transmission tune - am hoping to get that done in the coming month or so. The aftermarket VW specialist/tuning house I deal with has a near new Golf R exhaust ready for me - we'll pop the car on the hoist in the coming weeks and do some due diligence before undertaking the install.

I'm not sure whether I will lower it a little - they do look pretty nice when they are settled down a fraction in their stance, but because we do a lot of bushwalking and the T-Roc is our "dirt road car" I'm still undecided. What I do like the idea of though, is a set of gunmetal grey Pretoria wheels. I think they would look sweet and are definitely on the list! Brakes are also on the list - IMO the standard package is plenty strong enough for street driving, but with Pretoria wheels might need some improvement in the looks department. Whether that be painted calipers and slotted/drilled (?) rotors, or perhaps even a big brake package....who knows! The red calipers on my sons Polo GTi look lovely behind his black wheels - perhaps blue calipers to match the blue bodywork would be nice??? Lots of time to mull that over

It was going to cost me a LOT to changeover to a T-Roc R - I couldn't justify the cost when my 2.0TSI 4-Motion was 75-80 percent of what I wanted. Including all the above, I would still be many, many thousands of dollars in-front and will have a great spec vehicle.
    Cheers
