Fuel line clamps
Yesterday morning I got to dads home after shopping with him which is always stressful to smell diesel and see a trail along the road. Drop him and his shopping off and hightail it home the 5 kilometres as fast as I legally could trying not to leave a trail behind me. Get the car on my drive, put my overalls on, jack the ute up and see diesel pouring down fuel lines next to the filter which is left side behind the front wheel. On investigation the fuel line clamps had split open allowing diesel to push between the fuel barb and hose. Not released but cracked. I replaced the leaking one and ran the engine no more leaks. I replaced all the clamps that I could see and so far no more diesel where it shouldn't be.
The oem VW Amarok ones are the spring clip type that you need either the special tool for when they are hidden away or a pair of adjustable grips if they are easy to get to and they broke across the clamp. I replaced them all with double ear oettinger clamps and will have to investigate for other dodgy fuel clamps.
It is interesting as these are not subject to stress apart from the clamping and do not move about.
Ute is 2014 and 256000kms, living where I do salt water is an issue but I could not see it being a cause as these have snapped.
Luckily I caught it as soon as I saw it but if it had happened on a trip up country it could have been a different matter.
