  • 90TSI to 103TSI Turbo Upgrade Possible?

I've just inherited a 2013 90TSI 1.4 and I've been trying to find out if it's plausible to upgrade it to a 103TSI as it seems to be the same engine block with a different turbo. If I were to get parts from a wrecker from a 103TSI, what would I need other than the turbo and ECU?

I've looked into getting it tuned but if possible I'd rather get a larger turbo first then get it tuned as a 103TSI even better.

Is this possible/relatively easy or am I being stupidly unrealistic?

You can get some improvements but best is start with a 2.0t. As the saying goes no replacement for displacement.

You'll spend more in upgrading your 1.4 than you would selling and buying a 2.0t.

Can definitely get the parts and tune it - probably wouldn't cost that much if you're smart about it. What gearbox you have? Theres a few people in Europe that have done it from what I've heard.

I've got the 7speed DSG, had a quick look and I can get a used 103TSI turbo and ECU for $700, I feel like if it was just those parts, bolt on, that would be too easy however.

it likely actually is that simple. The 1.8 and 2.0 EA888 engines can all be easily swapped between IS15/20/30 turbos so it could well be that easy for the TSIs. That said, a tune will take the 90tsi engine/turbo to roughy the same if not more power than the 103tsi.

You have the DQ200 DSG which is limited to 250nm. Honestly tuning a car with a DQ200 is asking for trouble.

Overall I wouldn't bother, do some suspension mods and make it handle well and you'll forget its lack of outright power.

Having an ECU wont benefit you, unless you need a paperweight.

DSG isnt as weak as you think but needs tuning to cope.

It would be a waste of time buying a turbo.

Bolting on the 103TSI Turbo on a 90TSI will not give the same power output.

There is one other difference between 90TSI and 103TSI that I am aware of. The 90TSI only has variable valve timing on the inlet valves, the 103TSI has variable valve timing on both inlet and exhaust.
