On another note: The ED40 Clubsport sits very flat (for a VW) in the corners in the video below.

Alternatively ... come September 2016 ... the Golf 7.5 GTI will most likely end up with a digital dash display in addition to extra kit + possibility of a Manual Trans with LSD:

Volkswagen buyers snap up manual Golf GTI
You can be certain that the MK7.5/ or MK8 GTI won't have as a track-focused chassis setup overall. The GTI is supposed to be primarily a fun but all-round package so back to softer springs and arbs, slower steering etc. (compared to the CS) is the only logical choice. It surely provides a great platform to tune upon per will but it would not make much sense to stiffen the ride even at Clubsport levels from factory.

Getting the IS38 bigger turbo of the R/Clubsport is also not where I'd put my money on engine/power wise. Current GTI has some potential left un-touched so I imagine VW will be looking in freeing some of it (~230-250bhp) before moving into bigger hardware changes.

Not to mention that bodykit/interior will not be as dramatic as in the CS. I've seen some supposed next-gen GTI pics but it's clear they are fan's photoshop exercises (or wishes...) based on the sporty aggressive look of the Clubsport. None of that stuff like air curtains, brake ducts, side-skirts, rear wing are going to make it to the next-gen GTI, basically for the main reasons it won't have as a focused chassis as the Clubsport. The daily all-round character and classy look have to be retained for the base GTI.

      • How's the exhaust on the GTI 40? From what I've read in the reviews - it's much more livelier than the current GTI.

        • This is covered in a couple of posts back. If not try the other 40 ED thread.

VW didn't bring any 3 doors into Australia.

There is a white 40th here in Perth that accidentally had Clubsport stickers put on the factory

                  • Found another interesting article on a South African website today. Taking Volkswagen's excellent hot hatches sideways | The Citizen

This one line in particular "One thing that made me really happy with the Golf R is its four-wheel-drive system, but I was fairly disappointed when it failed to keep up with the Clubsport around the bends."

As if I wasn't champing at the bit before, really can't wait for the first National Park run now.

But then VW is the vid's sponsor, the same people (their marketing dept in particular) that deliberately detuned the CS engine to 265 precisely for the very same reasons, so expecting a fair battle would be silly.

Thankfully there are some many other accurate tests for anyone interested in actual track performance and times comparison between these cars.

Are you seriously trying to say that all the Top Gear lap times over many, many years of running their show (including the reasonably priced car) are not valid comparison tests?

Is that just because your car didn't win the test?

Sorry ringo they've been running this style of test for many, many years and I do think a one lap test is a very valid test. If you lose 3 car lengths off the line then you have to make it up over the rest of the lap. And that's exactly the point they showed in the video. AWD beats FWD off the line every time and the car with more grip, less weight and better braking will pick up time through the corners.

If you watched to the very end they did put up the times for each car by the same driver. Of course if the lap was longer or under different conditions yada yada. You just have to be happy that the track wasn't wet otherwise it probably would have been the R on the top of the table.

I don't know if that's a troll answer or a serious one... Nobody takes his car on a track to do one lap from a standstill and then go back home (at least I haven't seen any in all of my track-days), you realize how ridiculous that sounds I hope... In almost all forms of competing motorsport except drag races, cars are going round a track continuously, best lap times are set on the basis of a flying start (even on F1) so that any drivetrain advantage off the line is not reflected on actual track performance (cornering, braking, accelerating on the limit), especially between cars driven differently.

Tell me at least that you you did wonder (even a bit) how come the R is (naturally) slower in every other track that the CS has been also tested?

Top Gear is a great TV show that I love by the way, but hardly the definition of seriousness. A standing start is more spectacular and better for TV but that does not mean it is a standard to go by for comparing lap times between differently driven cars that are that close.

I don't care what VW wants to market their cars as, ("flagship", "enthousiast's car") etc. I prefer evaluating the actual tech in them and driving them and I am more than excited with the CS so no worries there at all. But only because it's been driven around a few tracks already, by reputable testers like Auto Motor und Sport and has proven how quick it is, this attempt to present things different is so laughable that I couldn't help noticing...
