Golf 40th vs Golf R

Well one would expect a golf update with the A3 and S3 facelift to be released in the final quarter of this year. Significantly for the S3 (R's posh big brother), it now gets an all new 7 speed wet DSG (DQ500?) and various other tech and handling upgrades. So the facelift R (and GTI) could well be worth the wait...

It was always a big mistake not to bring the VW Golf 7 GTI with LSD in Manual Trans form. Apparently all the Manual Trans ED40 Clubsports are sold out ... All 100 of them!

Yep. 100%. This is the sole reason I bought a manual R. Stock GTI Manual wasn't punchy enough and the only other manual option was the R.

As I've said before, in Europe the PP equipment is an option tick on the GTI rather than a discrete model. If that was the same here then a manual PP would have been the car I bought.

Reviews are starting to flood in. Looks like they are restricted primarily to the local racetrack with just a bit of public roadway driving:

But the Golf 7.5 seems just around the corner where it may be prudent to wait until September 2016?

Sometime Volkswagen Australia gets it right in terms of marketing, sometimes they get it very wrong (e.g. MKIV Golf R32 for 75K new). It was always a big mistake not to bring the VW Golf 7 GTI with LSD in Manual Trans form. Apparently all the Manual Trans ED40 Clubsports are sold out ... All 100 of them!

Not sure where you got your information from on the price of the MKIV R32, but I paid $64,500 on the road in February 2004.

I think its BS that the manuals are sold out, my dealer in Perth still has 2 arriving that are not allocated/sold.

Interesting Points:

Forums indicate that fully loaded DSG Golf GTI ED40 Clubsport are selling for 55K drive away. Friends of mine paid 58K for fully loaded Golf 7 R drive away about 12 months after initial release date. That's 3K difference + free leather on the Golf R, which makes them basically the same price as ED40 has no fancy seats (worth about 3K as an option if available).

Ironically ... fast forward 3 years and the Golf R may fetch 35K private sale, the ED40 GTI no more than 30K private sale. Golf R wins.

Additionally ... There are heaps of Golf R's in dealerships. Start offering stupid money (less than 58K) for R with a plain colour (I.e. White ... my fav colour), and the Golf R is looking like better value imo.

Yep, I got my Wolfsburg Ed Golf R with Sunroof (ie. fully loaded) for $58K.

Brian you should've tried an R with a Burger JB1 turns the R an absolute cracker of a drive, I've had it on my R for four months still get goose bumps and look for chewing gum everytime I go for the keys. Enjoy your drive sure it's good.

+1 I've got one too, and the difference is simply awesome - it transforms the car! Best $500 I've ever spent

I'd say it's a savvy dealer that secured manual CS floor stock. They'll be a hot item for enthusiast buyers prepared to pay to grab a manual!

I think massive discrepancies between dealerships on this one..

Between two large dealerships in Sydney, one of them locked me in a manual a month ago whilst the other was telling me "theres definitely no manuals in Australia" as recently as a fortnight ago! I even pointed out the press articles to them and they dismissed as market rumours.

Dealer will say whatever they need to try and lock in a sale - there's enough buyers who will swing either way on the gearbox.

Yeah the manuals have already been allocated even from what I heard. As for DSG I believe there are still a few about.

I imagine that dealers with a manual may swap for a DSG if it means both make a sale. Though they probably wouldn't swap for an R or GTI PP. The ED40's are pretty much guaranteed sales at full price.

If a dealer has sold all their allocation and are telling you that they're "sold out" then all they're trying to do is sell you something else.

Do a ring around or find a dealer that is willing to look up the stock availability/allocations. I'm almost certain there's still some stock about - possibly even try some of the regional dealers.

Considering there are about 11 listed on CarSales as Dealer New I would say there are a few left.

They are all listed as $51,194 (working from memory now) with 1 or 2 listed at $55k. All are DSG, no manuals.

Not to mention that alot of dealerships have at least 1 on display that they will eventually sell off as demonstrator models in a few weeks.

If the media says all Manual Golf GTI ED40 Clubsports are sold, then it must be true.

On another note: The ED40 Clubsport sits very flat (for a VW) in the corners in the video below.

Alternatively ... come September 2016 ... the Golf 7.5 GTI will most likely end up with a digital dash display in addition to extra kit + possibility of a Manual Trans with LSD:
