Golf 40th vs Golf R

I'm guessing that the racing style seats on the Euro Spec Clubsport GTI need to be approved by local Australian Design Rules (ADR's). Once Australia stops making motor vehicles, there's really not much need for ADR's, which may be merged into the EURO or USA rules. Lightweight cast alloy wheels wouldn't last very long on crap AUS roadways ... forged alloy maybe. Heap of people are bending their fancy Euro Cast Alloy aftermarket wheels these days. Forget about drift mode. Every man and his dog has an iPhone video camera easily accessible to video record hooliganism & upload to authorities ... VAG Haldex AWD & electronic handbrake prevents this type of behaviour occurring out in public.

ED40: Carbon Grey -v- White = White Wins

Bigger picture: I'd still take the White Golf R for same price ... or ... maybe the new Passat R/R-Line!

You kind of lose the effect of the smoked tails and painted roof on the grey. White looks sharp

You cannot beat 'White' in a sports vehicle with black trimming my friend. That's why my last three GTI's have been White in colour. considered Red, but the effect wears off after a while and Red cars fade longer term.

White is conservative and always easier to sell second hand imo. Everyone that purchases my second hand GTI's always say the car looks hot in the pics on the net.

The alternative applies with chrome trimming:

Chrome trims on dark cars stands out to a greater degree than on White cars. Especially in the case of the Black -v- White Passat with chrome trim. Although, I'd still take the White every time.

True, but you are talking about government employees - they will ensure their department will continue to be needed somehow...

Back on the topic of 40th vs R - I would still chose R, but I always planned to go to stage 2 before I bought the car, and knew that AWD was the only way to handle nearly 400HP. I also prefer the subtle styling.

Took another Golf R for a test run yesterday and I must say it's not as powerful as I would imagine. It's definitely got the balls but it just seems like you've gotta put your foot down. I'm concerned that this is the normal VAG tune. I had my Mk6 for about 2 months before got it tuned and ever since I've felt this is the way it really should be stock. I don't know if people feel the same about the R coz maybe that would make a world of difference?

In terms of power output the CS I feel is just like a stock GTi with a tune + all the aerodynamics and suspension etc. I think a good VS would be PP GTi tuned and CS? However in terms of $ then the CS is just a no brainer.

I think you'll find it's normal. I don't feel like my S3 is a rocket, but it's quick when it needs to be.

As for a tuned PP, I don't doubt you could get a PP to outperform a stock CS in a straight line, but I think per ringo it's all the other work they've done that completes the package, especially for the dollars.

In either case you'll be up for a few thousand minimum to replace the awful stock wheels.

Off topic: that black and chromed Passat looks the goods.

No fence jumping involved. Pics show my local dealer at Sutherland Shire Volkswagen. They have two GTI ED40's, 4 x GTI's and 4 x Golf R's in the showroom yard alone. Which makes me think Sutho are holding out for a better price as many dealers don't start paying vendor finance until after 60 days or Volkswagen is dumping up-market Volkswagen Golf's on the Australian market due to uncertainty in EU and Japan?

The Black with the Chrome accents looks great when clear, but trust me, you don't want black long term either. Passat has electronic fold-back mirrors and all variants have DCC standard, even based models. Good value. I think the forthcoming Passat R with Golf R internals and perhaps only 30-50kgs extra heft will be a peach if priced right (50-55K ... same as ED40).

Back on topic ... the ED40 GTI will still struggle for straight line traction in greasy & wet conditions, especially on concrete roadways. The tricky LSD will not circumvent this issue in a straight line.

Yeah I would be unlikely to take up a black car, although I do try and take good care of my cars (with a little help from the professionals and Opticoat). But I do love the look..

Sadly I'd expect at least a $10k+ premium for a 'Passat R' judging by the Superb 206 pricing.

Not sure what you mean in terms of "uncertainty in EU and Japan"?

I tend to stay away from black cars only because I reckon they only look good when they're crystal clean. 90% of the time they are not. Also they hide any contrast and I'm a fan of contrast in colours especially red/black/white.
