In terms of Ambient Lighting, there still are lights at the doors and foot-well though no? For me the biggest difference is the illuminating red stripe which I agree would be a nice feature and in fact if there is one variant in which it would look less out of space it is the Clubsport.

But passenger seat belt warning, really a problem? Who in 2016 doesn't instinctively wear his seat-belt when he enters a car or even worse forgets to put it on and needs a reminder? Not talking about people that deliberately don't want to wear it, but for everybody else that wants to wear but... forgets?!

As for inconsistent needle sweep, I find it to be pretty rare and only if I do some other action first after unlocking, other than open driver's door and turn ignition on (in which case it always works). It's weird but not nearly important enough to even be considered annoying (unless you have a passenger who drives a very old car that you want to impress ...)

That been said I still wouldn't even think of getting one without the buckets. I know this might not be appreciated here but imho it loses a lot of its uniqueness (replace with: sexiness/charmness/exclusivity) without them, just not the same car in my eyes.
It's funny but I am in the opposite camp to you and find the standard seats excellent and suit the interior better than the bucket seats which imo aesthetically don't match the interior particularly well. Here in Europe some customers from Germany and the UK have reported squeaks and rattles with the the buckets an issue I certainly would not like to have considering the cost of these seats and the trade off by going for them over the standard seats. The bucket seats offer no advantage performance wise whatsoever over the standard and leather seats and no matter what seats one chooses the Clubsport is still the same car.

    • True but the bucket seats just make it more unique... I guess it's everyone's preference...

      • On the needle sweep, mine is inconsistent... it however works all the time if I wait 5 seconds after closing the door before switching on the ignition

Arguing over looks and aesthetics is like arguing over politics and I am not to tell anyone what to like but naturally, any track focused/uber sports variant looks better with buckets (simply more racing/motorsport look) and the Clubsport buckets in particular are some of the nicest, most stylish buckets I've seen in a long time. They are not just plain black bucket seats offered in other cars that might look like a retro-fit. They have GTI-specific design (matching red stitching, combination of fabric and alcantara textiles) that match the bespoke Clubsport interior details like the steering wheel more than any other seat. They are also incredibly comfortable in long journeys, unlike other bucket seats I've tried in the past. It's no wonder why in other forums, a thread pops-up every week or so asking where they can find them and how to retro-fit them. Plus you can't easily beat Recaro quality. Mine does not rattle either so I haven't the slightest regret about going for them, quite the opposite.

I've had sports cars with sports seats (like the standard Clubsport seats) before and the best thing I've heard a couple of times was "seats are not bad". With the Clubsport seats I have already got so many comments at the level of "seat porn" (One actually asked "if I look below the seat will I find a racing helmet?" ) and that's even from non-car people, in less than 2 month's ownership so yes, they do have a great impact on the car's looks and it definitely wouldn't be the same car without them. For me they make the car feel far more special than basically every other competitor in its class (and some above) and replace the dull part of "Golf-ness" with much more exciting feelings...

          • I think that I've just spotted something else that we don't get on the Australian spec GTI 40, the metal foot rest plate.

            • So is it common knowledge that the ED40 GTI doesn't need/can't take torque arm "dog bone" inserts? Went to transfer mine to a fellow forum members ED40 this afternoon and notice that the ED40 already has a rubber insert. It appears glued to the stock insert (as in it's one part) but still doesn't fill the gap as much as an aftermarket part does.

I installed an 034 Motorsport insert in mine, was a version 2 though. Works really well and no issues on install!

I've started thinking about a JB1... Is it worth getting for the 40 Years? Would I notice any difference in terms of every day driving?

Yeah howy loving the Red, was thinking about the JB1 but think I'll spend the cash on some Michelin PSS first as I think they'll greatly enhance traction, then once I'm really craving more power have a look at the various available options.

                        • I need to get one of those 034 Motorsports mounts. I'm 3500km in driving this thing and I have started to feel the slop come through

Also, when driving in Sport mode it gets a bit twitchy, especially in the rear when I'm hitting a large roundabout or swinging curve. Not so fun when driving with the paddles. I assume the tyres also have a little bit to say about that also.

Actually, there's one thing with that really grates me with the DSG. I just can't throw down two gears at once. And on auto mode it likes to select a higher gear too early. And that's killing my life in traffic. I start frantically hitting the paddle to override it, especially when I'm coasting to a stop, due to my habit of engine braking.

Does anyone else keep flicking through modes during a trip ? I wish I could change modes quickly through the steering wheel.

                          • You are not alone.. I do keep flicking the modes all the time.. lol..

About switching it through the steering wheel, i don't know why we can't have it..
I'm pretty sure we can switch it on via VCDS ??
As my mate RS3 can switch his mode through his steering wheel too..

Are you referring to driving in normal or sport mode? Not sure if DSG settings are much different on the ED40 to the R but dropping it from normal to sport via the gear shift (quick push down) normally drops it two gears in the R
