So I'm the proud owner of a manic stage 3 polo gti manual, that has unfortunately found itself commuting 80km a day in Sydney traffic. Although very exciting and 'fun' to drive the endless gear shifting, lack of back doors and boot space is really starting to wear on me. The rock hard ride, necessitated by the matchbox wheel track is getting old too.
A new golf gti mk7 is not beyond my reach... But at fifty k that's an investment property somewhere...
So here's the thing right... Mk6 golf's, gti and r are taking an absolute beating in resale and can be had for 30k with very low kms. I understand the mk7 is an extremely accomplished vehicle. I was astounded by the ride and handling, but it's a mk7 worth $20k more than a three year old low k mk6?
Although I'm wary of modded cars, a quick search using 'apr' on Carsales quickly delivers a host low k stage 2 cats s well for similar prices.
If I had to list a set of requirements of read like this :
Automatic
Four doors
Equal handling as polo
Able to be tuned to equal speed as polo (~300hp/1200kg)
Better comfort than polo
Better refinement than polo
More boot space than polo
Equal quality of build
Better sex appeal (just because)
Buy price that won't have me in the dog house
So... A golf right? Or an s3... So this is where I start eyeing of a mk6 golf r. I've sat is every other wrx and competitors car and when you add automatic to the mix it excludes just about everything except the vag dsg cars... Because they're ****e. And yes, a late model xr6t is a terrific proposition but the wallet melting 14l/100km in traffic turns me off immediately.
Or... A dreaded new my16 polo gti... (the safe, practical, miserable option) that my partner would endorse in a heart beat.
If anyone has some experience or sympathy please feel free to weigh in. Does an ex demo mk7 hold an extra $10k of value over an outgoing five year old R? Please help...
