Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Retrofit Colour Multi Function Display to a Regular MFD vehicle

    Hi everyone,

So I've had a thought for a while about possibly retrofitting a MFA+ (Premium Coloured MFA) from a Golf GTI or R to my 103TSI which only has the standard B&W MFA. I haven't found much online from people doing this in the past, but I thought I'd at least get an idea of a price from VW today.

The part number I got was from a VW Golf Mk7 GTI with Performance Package (PP)
    Part Number: 5G1920756
    Price: $1958.32 excluding GST

Now having a look on places like ECSTuning.com, I can have the unit shipped to my door from the US
for less then $1300AUD which is much more reasonable.

My question for everyone is, Is this type of modification/retrofit possible?
I have a ross-tech cable, I know coding will have to be done and it definitely WONT be plug and play; But is this actually possible?
Even if I've got to find a part number from a TSI Golf which is neither GTI or R to make those odds of working just a bit more, I'll find one I'm - Just using the GTI PP as an example.

    Any help would be grateful

depends if immo is still in the cluster like the golf mk5/mk6. if it immo is in cluster then the dealer will need to be involved. if the immo module is separate such as like the passat then it will be a swap with coding and you will be done..

i did this for my b7 passat in under 30 minutes. cluster seems very expensive, passat full colour mfd cluster was <$500 shipped from europe. also ensure that you have the correct revision cluster as you will need to deal with metric and imperial versions.

It must be possible, I specced the premium MFD when I ordered a Highline, it wasn't listed as an option though, I requested via the dealer when placing the order. The dealer had to email the request which was granted but at a cost of $500.

I know it is listed as an option in other markets such as UK and is about 100 Stirling.

As for retro-fitting outside of a factory order I don't know of anyone having done this as yet and it does seem very costly for what you gain.

You guys in NZ always have nice options available. (Even if it's off the book) The most we seem to get away with is a colour choice. (Red AllTracks if I remember correctly?)

@Eaglehawk, agreed those NZ folk always get better options then us Aus folk.

I agree to everyone, It is rather costly - I was more just looking to see whether this is a retrofit that would be even possible. Lately we've seen a retrofit of folding mirrors possible, being enabled with some simple coding and replacing of the original parts are rather cheap.
Moreso I was hoping possibly has tried this crazy mod

Are you willing to consider an aftermarket MFD upgrade rather than the genuine VW unit?

This type of upgrade is what our company produces - we've got products coming shortly for Mk5 and MK6 Golf but we haven't yet had the chance to build and test for the Mk7. If you're interested in taking a sneak look at what we've got in the pipeline and possibly helping out with some product testing (we're in Canberra, so not too far away) drop us a PM and we'll sort something out.

I'd be happy to have a look at your option sure even up for a drive to Canberra actually, haven't taken it for a long cruise yet.

I'll pm you then, look forward to hearing from you guys!
