  • High pitched whine with Xenons

    Hi all,

Being new to Golfs and Xenon's in general I thought I'd ask here before being concerned.

When the xenon's switch on in my Mk7 R, there is a really high pitched whine. It disappears when they turn off

    Is this normal?

    High pitched whine with Xenons

Mine does it too. Pretty sure the noise is coming from the ballast. Mine makes all sorts of noise when you shut it down.

I think this happens with most Bixenon cars. The noise is even present in my C250 when it first starts up

xenon need ~20,ooo volts to start and ~85 volts to keep them going
The ballast has a voltage inverter, the whine is the frequency it's running at

Also remember when the xenons are on the aiming motor for them will be operating. That makes a whining kind of noise, but if your at a dead standstill and not turning the steering, you shouldn't be able to hear anything.

It is a high pitch/frequency - not everybody can hear it
Even those that can hear it often don't notice

Yeah i have noticed that the mk7 is so noisy!
There are loud noises all over the car, noise when you turn it on, loud noise from the rear camera and when you turn it off.

Ahh well, will get used to it soon i guess. I just pump the stereo!

Yeah I can't hear it while the car is on. Just in the garage if you unlock it.

Not really concerned it others have it too

Does anybody know what may cause a high pitch noise that seems to be coming from the glove compartment?

I heard it for the first time this morning while driving (with stereo on and pretty loud too, I thought it was my music at first but the squealing/whining noise was still there when I turned the music off!) and it keeps coming and going... It even remains there for about 3-5 minutes after parking.

I know of the "humming" sound the xenons make, but this is another sound all together. If anybody here knows what a capacitor whine sounds like, that pretty much describes it. Could it be the infotainment unit in the glove compartment? The sound is definitely coming from that area.

I really doubt that a fan can make such a high pitched sound.. The car was only on for about 5 minutes before it started and I was streaming music via Bluetooth when it started (i.e. not using any CDs in the infotainment unit).

I didn't hear it at all on the way home from work though. This is really weird :/

When the car applies the brakes itself ie ACC or auto hold you can hear the high pitch noise the solenoid makes. I can here it in my car. Do you have the driver assist in your car?
