GPS options

Hi guys,

My 90TSI comfortline will be delivered this week. It comes with inbuilt reverse camera.

I wanted Satnav inbuilt but was quoted $950 extra PLUS 4 to 7 months waiting time, so I decided to skip that.

Now, I'm after an aftermarket or retrofitted GPS option that can work with the existing Composition Media touchscreen.

I found this: VW Golf Mark VII 7 SatNav GPS Multimedia Rear Camera Interface :: VW :: XCarLink but not sure what that is or how it works?

I read about RNS510 and ANS510/810. I even saw some new DNS will be released soon? But I'm quite confused about all this, what they are, how they are connected together and how they work together.

I also contacted cartronix about this VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 7 SAT NAV DVD ADON and was told this is only an ADON interface ("
That Video interface ADON is to add a video input for GPS and for multimedia and one for reverse camera .") and was quoted extra $499 for Sat nav with IGO map.

I also read that the MK7 is different to other VW as it has a lot of components in the glovebox rather than all being in the dash, which makes things complicated for setup/compatibility?

In any case, I would really appreciate it if someone would explain what options I have to get GPS installed on the existing built-in Composition media touchscreen.

That looks cool! I don't have the car yet, so I'm not sure about mirrorlink, but it sounds like something VW would put in "discover media" or "discover pro" rather than the base "composition media"?

reading from here http://www.techradar.com/news/car-te...orlink-1090628 it appears, at the time,that it would only be an option for VW golf 2013 in europe? any ideas for AU cars?

Called them and was referred to call installer. Called installer: Takes between 2 to 3 hours to setup. The components come with igo for navigation and rear camera. Cost about $1500 for navigation setup alone. Cost about $1700 for navigation + rear camera.

In other words, the HiTV sells the navigation + camera together, you can't just buy one without the other .However the installer can install just the navigation (about $1500) or both (about $1700)

i'll wait to see cheaper options for navigation only and/or mirror link

I got that system installed in my golf. I really dont recommend it. The interface extremely slow, it takes literally 5 minutes to put in any destination, there is just a massive lag. It really feels like it's running off something from the 90's. It's far easier to just use your phone for an audio guide, even if you don't have a onscreen display. The reverse camera is good though.

DIY OEM retrofitted navigation system or Canberra installer

So, I found this: VW Golf Mark VII 7 SatNav GPS Multimedia Rear Camera Interface*::*VW*::*XCarLink (UK website)

Been in contact with them. They are happy to ship to Australia and supply Australian maps. In their response they also provided me with the installation manual, which all looks fairly easy.

The only concern setting up is to remove the current screen/system so that I can make the connections, and strategically place/rig up the navigation system (the installation guide does not cover this). An installer would, no doubt, know how to do this easily.

Considering current prices for Australian retrofitted navigation on the mk7 are a rip off, I wouldn't mind getting the UK one and installing myself at 350pounds/AUD$585.

Alternatively, would someone be able to recommend a reliable installer in Canberra that would be willing to fit that product?


Some side notes:

1. Alternative Australian Products/resellers/installers
I've been in touch with HiTV (Product home web page_ol.gif) and contacted their retailer in Canberra, but was quoted 1500 for navigation setup alone (including product cost).

Contacted JKU, and was quoted $1529 for the system + $550 for installation.

Contacted Cartronix (VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 7 SAT NAV DVD ADON) and was quoted $995 for the interface ONLY (incl installation) and extra $500 for the GPS system (incl. installation), i.e. total of $1495.

Carkitme (Golf Mk7 GPS | CarKitMe | Sydney) which appears to only offer installation in NSW does not look that expensive at $995 installed, just impractical location for me.

2. Interesting thing I read from the installation manual is:
"The unit is a video only interface. For audio, you must connect the Audio Out connections either to an FM modulator or AUX input if present in the car. You can firstly select FM or AUX, and then switch to the AV inputs to have sound and video playing simultaneously"

On the basis of how the other interfaces (the Australian ones) all seem to work the same way, i.e. by hooking to the car's CAN, I strongly suspect that they all have the same issue with audio.

3. Also, the Mk7 does NOT sport any mirrorlink natively. The example below is probably added through a retroffited interface:

So can the standard GPS system from VW be retro fitted to the Comfortline if it wasn't installed from the factory?
