  • MK7 90 TSI Issue

    Hi

I just bought a GOLF MK7 90TSI last week and this is my first VW car.

After 5 day's drive, I noticed when I drove the car downhills and used break to reduce the speed, the RPM will automatically jump from 2,000 to 3,000. The RPM will stay at around 3,000 for 1-2 seconds and started to reduce. I also notice this normally happened on Gear 5 changed to Gear 4 or Gear 6 changed to Gear 5.

I am the newbie and not sure if it is a DSG problem. Shall I take the car to dealer for further inspection?

    Please help. Thank you.

The gearbox is most likely downshifting on descents in order to prevent the car from gaining too much speed too quickly.

It is also common practice for people with manual gearboxes.

    Nothing to be concerned about.

Thanks for your quick reply Diesel_vert! This makes me feel better. Just read some VW news from SMH and I hope the quality of MK7 could be better.

I think it's referred to as 'downhill assist' in the owners manual, have a look in there and it explains it all. It did it on my MKV golf and its doing it on my new MK7

Hope you used the brakes and it hasnt really broken yet LOL

If it changed down and the revs didnt increase it would stand on its nose rather quickly

Just fast downshifting, with the throttle being blipped to rev match... High-tech stuff, from Lamborghini, Ferrari et al... How are you finding the car as a new VW owner?

Adaptive (or fuzzy logic) automatic transmissions may have been considered high-tech stuff 25 years ago, but many vehicles these days come with this sort of technology in one form or another, irrespective of gearbox type (torque converter, automated single or double clutch, CVT).

I think the updated 6 speed auto in the Holden Cruze does similar.

I like the car so far! It is very fuel consuming on my 90TSI. Average consumption is 4.9L when driving 80% on the highway.

Has anyone noticed a soft but audible crackling sound when going from stand still to about 40km/hr? It sounds like it's the transmission when it's changing from gear 1 to 2 to 3. It's much more prominent in sports mode too. Any ideas?

In regards to OP's, it may also be known as engine braking......to control the speed.

Hope u enjoy your Golf 7 which is lighter than previous models.

I do notice something similar (if my interpretation of your description is correct) with my car - but only when windows are down, and I feel like it's from the turbo...because everytime I clutch-in/let go of accelerator it's gone, and it's only in gear 2...

I have also just discovered a rattle sound (ticking / think metal knocking) when accelerations from start and also happens when you accelerate from 1st gear to 4th gear.

The car has only done 700km. It is louder when engine is cold.

I did abit of digging around and I think it is the famous Waste Gate Rattle. Found more info on a South Africa vw forum.

I have book the car in for a checkup...so will update.

wys and firstvw, just came back from service to get the sound checked out, there is a clip that needs to be replaced by the there is no ETA on when the part will be available, it could be a month or it could be several months. Not happy that this is something that comes straight out of a factory manufactured car and obviously not an isolated incident. Apparently, it's not a waste gate rattle though but I didn't really understand the explanation to why there was a rattle. So new mk7 buyers be warned before you buy.
