Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    • Regarding axle tramp. I've had my GTI PP now for about a month (1000km) and I've only had axle tramp once. It was pouring rain and was at a set of traffic lights facing up a steep'ish hill. My girlfriend was driving and and she accelerated it did it (yep, I know, I can hear you all saying 'there's your problem right there'!). I took it out on a windy country road yesterday and flogged it as hard as I could (legally of course and never experienced it once.
I always thought it was just a FWD thing and its prone to happen on takeoff. If its happening at 50-60km/h then that sounds pretty wierd, unless its wet.
I have had the TC kick in a couple of times in 1st-2nd gear, but no tramping.
BTW, my tires are Perilli P-Zero's that were fitted from the factory.

      • Dudgemo,
Looks awesome mate! My first GTI was black. Make sure to never use one of the filthy soaping brushes at the car wash places. Only hand wash it yourself and change mitts regularly to avoid swirl marks or get a paint protection treatment even better. I was too lazy looking after mine. Hence I now have a white one! Black still looks brilliant on a GTI. Congrats!

I've heard tyres play a big part in it. Are you also DSG or manual?

          • My Mk. 5 and 6 GTI's were manuals and now have a DSG PP GTI. I can't see that tyres could play such an important part in axle tramping. More grip/softer tyre would probably make it worse as the traction control fights it. I'm certainly not going to buy a new set of 19's in the hope it stops it
I know when to expect it now and drive around the problem by being smooth on the throttle. Just very disappointed that the Mk 7 still does it.

            • Martin over on the occy thread has had various tyres with varying amounts of axle tramp reported for each. I'm about to change from contis to either ps3's or good years very soon so I'll be able to report back if my axle tramping in my occy is any different. I've certainly noticed it getting worse with the wearing of the contis.

              • I haven't got a GTI, only a 110TDI. But I noticed since getting the car last year, axle tramp has started to occur. Even on a dry level road. Car has to be in sports mode.

                • APR have has released the ECU tune for the mk7 GTI, WOW huge gains. I'm just waiting for them to release the R version now

DSG. Do all GTI's (or all VW for that matter) come with the same brand of tires? (ie. do all GTI PP's come with Perelli P-Zero's?)

If its anything like Mk6 then there will be a mixture of brands depending on build time, although the PP 19s being a little more unique in size may all be P-Zeros.

My standard GTI came with Bridgestones.

My GTI PP came with PZeros . Unfortunately I ran over something within the first 400km and it was stuffed. $550 later it turns out that size PZero is hard to get.
