  • Rumour: Limited edition Golf VII 'Carbon GTI'

    Wouldn't this be fantastic?!

Volkswagen plans lightweight Golf ‘Carbon GTI’

    200kg less than current GTI
Tricky VAQ diff from forthcoming Haldex V setup (Carbon GTI still FWD)

Why would they bother making a normal GTI in addition to that, and how much quicker/pricier would the R have to be? Guessing it would otherwise be a limited edition like the Adidas.

    Sounds good though

Yeah, agree it would be marketed like the Adidias or ED35 etc.

Sounds like they can't really give it more power than the stock engine otherwise it'll be too close to the R
Imagine flashing that.... it would be very quick...

The article did mention 40th Anniversary of the Golf (tho not of the GTI)

This IMO will be along the lines of the GTI Excessive concept (AUSmotive.com » Wörthersee: Volkswagen Golf GTI Excessive) from 2010 Wörthersee festival a hard core designed GTI for the driving enthusiast.
VW have tried in the past to do an Uber Golf above the VR6 (Mk3) / R32 (Mk5) with the A59 (Mk3) / RSI (Mk5) - will the rumours come true? hopefully, but I'll believe when I see it.

So far VW have lots of hot hatches coming......

Do manufacturers often produce limited editions of cars that haven't even been released?

Was surprised to see they made that Audi A1 with the Golf R performance (saw it on brand new Fifth Gear today)

Not really, VW tends to under quote performance figures from the factory. For example, in MOTOR magazine December 2012 edition they did a 4 way comparo with GTI, new Focus ST, Hyundai Veloster and FT86. They got the stock standard Mk6 GTI DSG to run a 6.12. It's not that hard to imagine shaving off >0.12sec by adding a few extra kilowatts, better diff and 200kg lighter.

                          FWIW:
                          155kW 280Nm GTI ran a 6.12 and 14.59, 1:20.5 lap time
                          184kW 360Nm Focus ran a 6.79 and 15.05, 1:19.6 lap time
                          150kW 265Nm Veloster ran a 7.77 and 15.55, 1:24.0 lap time
                          147kW 205Nm FT86 ran 7.19 and 15.20, 1:22.2 lap time

And most importantly, the GTI was awarded favourite by the judges. Not bad for a 4 year old model against three brand new models.

A great achievement in my eyes.

If I recall correctly they gave the nod to the Focus as a slightly more focused sports drive but the Golf won based on its all round performance.. which is exactly why I chose it in the first place anyway.

And judging by their brief overview of the Mk7 (plus Michael Taylor's 'special' column) their love affair with the Golf isn't about to wane, or be affected by their new mistress the Toybaru twins.

That particular car must be a very fresh example, and the testing conditions were also quite favorable (decent time for the 86 as well). Motor's previous best with a DSG GTI was 6.52 in a comparo with a 3 MPS a couple of years back, and they've also pulled out a few high 6s.

There's always some degree of variation from car to car in the order of tenths or hundreds of a second - aside from all the obvious variables like temp and humidity, surface grip and smoothness, tyre compound and condition, car fluids and temps... not to mention driver talent - something often found wanting in motoring journos.

I'd be pretty happy if I managed a 6.1 from a stock GTI. Tuned / modded is another matter entirely, of course.
