High fuel consumption Alltrack 132tsi

Fuel economy on my 2016 132tsi Alltrack has been worsening of late and I can’t work out why.

Nothing has really changed in terms of driving habits or fuel, but I’ve gone from averaging around 8-8.5l/100km to 10-10.5l/100km on U98 with mainly urban driving.

Only thing I can think of is perhaps the age of the car? I’ve owned it for 2 years and have just clocked over 100k, averaging about 12k/year.

Other than that, I’m stumped. Any ideas or similar experiences?

The weather is getting colder, that increases fuel consumption, especially if you do lots of short trips where the engine isn't fully warmed up (the coolant temp on VWs shows normal long before the engine is properly warmed up).

Also wet roads affect fuel consumption as the tyres use up energy pumping out water from the tread.

Have you checked your tyre pressures (too low increases fuel consumption) ?

I've not checked my VW but in the past my French ****box used to report xL/100 but when I did the KM vs litres filled at the bowser over a number of fills I found it to be out by 8%... suggesting the numbers from the ****box's on board computer were better than the actual.

Coupled with that the ODO was also an addiitonal 9% over reading the distance (109 km/h on the speedometer was a true 100 as per Racelogic GPS data logging) it really did overstate (or understate) the fuel used to traverse an actual 100km

Not suggesting the VW will be wrong but worth doing the traditional method for a few fills and see what shakes out.... if you're that way inclined

Try running some liquimolly fuel system cleaner through it and give it an Italian tune down the freeway off ramp a few times..

It should run more efficient a tank or two after the cleaner has run through, its not the age of the car, driving it too softly isn't really efficient in the long run.

These engines need a bit of a flogging to keep them efficient and keep the injectors flowing nicely.
