I ended up using this experience as an excuse to join the OBD11 club and got the battery coded.
My issue was being duped by VW Roadside Assistance. Not unreasonable to assume that if sourcing a battery from VW Assist that it would be VW approved AND be correctly fitted including the coding. Instead I got a bloke in a Batteries - R - Us van selling car batteries who seemingly knew nothing about correctly fitting the battery. I have no way of knowing if the battery is VW approved or not, and I am pretty sure he didn't know either - his gig was simply to respond to flat battery call outs and sell replacement batteries. I got 4 years out of the original factory fitted battery (which came with 3 year warranty) yet whatever I now have in the car is only good for 2 years, assuming I can ever find this outfit again.
