Both meant to capture small particles in the exhaust gases and then burn them rather than blow them out into the atmosphere. PPFs are now mandatory for cars in Europe, I'm not sure what will happen for Oz and US market VWs.

You'd hope the PPF would be better engineered than some DPFs ( which simply didn't work for cars always driven on short trips ), but you can never be sure with VW

Oh look, Traffic Jam Assist is actually listed in the specs. I wonder if they'll leave it enabled.

Dealer said it was installed and active, although didn’t seem to know about any Victorian road laws that might mean it must be disabled. Hadn’t had a chance to try it to test personally; picked up the car, drove it 7km to the ceramic detailer. Will pick up properly on Sunday and take it down the Great Ocean Road

That’s a bit cheeky...Some prefer to ride stealth!!!

I never like the soundaktor in the mk6 GTI, and test driving the R in race mode it sounded even more "fake" to what I remember the GTI's sound was like. I can't wait to have this switched off, and I might buy or find someone with an ODBEleven thingy to tweak that and some other settings like annoying "make sure you don't break the law" prompt + warnings for seat belt, open door etc…

Hey all! Thought I’d chime in with general thoughts and feelings after owning the car for 6 days. Overall, I’m kind of “meh” on the Special Edition. I love the idea of the extra features, including the exhaust, but in reality inside the cabin I imagine the SE features to feel barely different from a regular R. (Maybe I should have the wife drive up/down the street a few times so I can experience it from the outside If I could have my time again I’d probably go for a regular R, especially since I could get the grey. (They has a polished one in the showroom on pickup day and I tried hard not to look at it

I am disappointed in a few things for the premium price point. For example parking assist where the car parks itself isn’t available but I believe it is on the GTI (? Could stand to be corrected here). Not that I’d use it often or ever but I’d definitely like to “say” I have it and show it off once in a while. Cant think of the others off the top of my head.

Now the bad stuff is out of the way, here’s some good stuff

The R over the GTI I had in US drives great! Definitely feel the difference in acceleration and cornering. Have not got any wheel spin yet and had plenty on the GTI starting off the line, and not even spirited.

I’ve driven it spirited once so far in the backroads/hills of Apollo Bay and it was really great! I expect the car to be able to handle stuff that was out of my comfort zone by long way! I pushed it as far as I was comfortable on the one 20 min session and it didn’t skip a beat. And that’s a fully loaded boot and back seat, with a wife in the passenger seat.

The Lapiz blue *does* look good 90% of the time, even through I’d prefer the grey still. It really stands out in direct sun where you can see how deep the metallic paint is. A massive variation in tone from highlight to shadow. The other 10% in bright overcast weather it kind of looks like a Toyota or small Mistibishi. Kinda flat and mid-toned. Not that reflective in those conditions. Most of the time I pause for s few seconds to look at it when I park and return to it. With the black wheels the Lapiz does look bad-arse. And it does get noticed: I’ve had several drivers comment or motion to me while driving alongside, and one very “enthusiastic” pedestrian make comments while I was waiting to pull out out a street. This is a live/gate for me though. *shrug

In six days the car has had its fair share of trials. Couple days after detailing it was completely covered in dust: Bart Kowalski on Instagram: “Went for a 200km drive in #straya
                      #golfrspecialedition #golfr #filthy”
, and later that same day suffered a rock chip in the front bumper: Bart Kowalski on Instagram: “Well, the car has officially evolved from “new” to “regular”. Rock chip on the front bumper from a combination of road resurfacing on…”.

Driving around country Vic the R’s driven plenty of dirty, muddy roads, been heavily rained on, had a couple exhaust tips scoop up some dirt and debris (my fault: reversing out of a tight spot I backed into a mound of stuff which looked flat in the rev camera. Luckily no damage though), and last but not least caught about 10 mins of hail in Northern Victoria this arvo. Does not appear to be any damage from that but I haven’t had a close look yet.

                      ///

To sum up, and in saying all the stuff above, I love the car so far! I can only imagine it’ll get better the more I get to know it and particularly when it gets some more appropriate driving time under it’s belt.

Thanks for reading! Feel free to ask me any questions and I’ll try answer them.

Ps, I have not forgotten about securing that exhaust note evidence. It will come eventually

Some honest thoughts there (sometimes lacking in some parts of this forum).

Just call it "pointless park delete" so as to protect those Cadiz, and soon to be BBS.

Haha, sure! I got the pointless park delete model because party tricks are overrated To be fair, the lane assist + ACC is a neat enough party trick, particularly when I took my folks out for a drive without hands or feet controlling the car.

Did a few more kms today many on the twisty roads in the hills of outer Melbourne, and had a bit more fun. It will definitely grow on me when I settle on the tech/features I will actually use vs the stuff I won’t care about.

I’m being extra careful not to curb the 19” Prets, and practising for the BBS coming in the new year. I think the 18”s will be a welcome change to my future road trips. Leave the 19”s for the track days

I travelled some of those twisties when I lived in Melbourne; pity about the moronic speed limits they post on some of the roads.

Yeah, the speed limits are a bit safe, but I wasn’t too fussed: most of it was fast enough for me at the moment. It was the other drivers that got in the way

Did a pull from standstill out of a t-intersection to about 140kph which felt …very nice! Forgot to chuck it in race mode though and did it in Eco or comfort still fun tho

I see your typo there.. '..to about 100kph (in the 100 zone) which felt..'
