Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mods for R wagon as a daily, cabin/ external noise when in Comfort Mode?

    Hi Folks,

For our new R wagon, I am considering some toys - ecu tune stage 1 + cold air intake + turbo inlet elbow + intake hose +turbo muffler delete. Via Racingline.

Aside from my spirited adventuring, the R will also be the family wagon and my wife will also using as a daily driver. And she isn’t a fan of fast cars per se.

The R ride has been great for her in comfort mode, she has no complaints (btw I am still amazed as to how smooth everything is in comfort, even on 19”s. Great job VW!).

Though with the addition of these mods, if one uses comfort mode exclusively, and does not “give it the beans” at all, will there be any noticeably difference from a sound perspective (ie much/any whoosh or burbling)? I am mainly concerned with intrusive cabin noise, though external noise query as well.

Would appreciate advice from those of us who live with such kit day to day. If too noisy, might non install of the turbo muffler delete do the trick as a compromise?

Depending what intake you get they can be a bit “whooshy”. My wife hates driving boy racer cars but likes the performance when you put your foot down.

You’ll probably want an enclosed intake as they are generally quieter.

VRW and revo make enclosed intakes both much better than the pod filter stuck in a hot engine bay

My choice was revo as the intake scoop over radiator and the airbox lid are carbon fiber and look nice

One thing you can do for the internal noise is dial down the soundaktor, either by unplugging it or adjusting via VCDS

+1 I disconnected/ removed mine completely and it’s so much nicer to drive just with “normal” engine noises.

Thanks for the advice folks. Yeah ill be going a closed intake (maybe VWR or Revo (thanks for the info Kachingg!).

Soundaktor - yeah, ive only done 1,300km so far (and havent really opened up too much this early as yet), but the novelty is already wearing off. Disabling sounds like a plan. Funny when we had our first test drive and opened it up, my wife goes 'is that the engine, it sounds fake?' right off the bat. ...maybe she would love the intake+extra bits after all lol.

Bro that thread is the best! Love your work!

Hey another dumb question, bonus round - with the kit I mention above, would this just impact the turbo "whooshy-ness", or might I also get some deeper engine notes, burbles etc ? Have been watching a number of youtube vids, and its really not that clear.
