Flat6, I think at 100km/h the 6sp sits around 2200 rpm in the 7Sp its around 1800. I'm not surprised you got APR tuned one it's massive difference over stock.

I was going to post before advising the 7.5 for few reasons especially if tuning. The stronger 7SP gear box and also latest updated turbo revision, will have latest Haldex Pump and the new Water pump with metal instead of plastic.

I say this as I'm stage 2 APR 2014 MK7R and performance phenomenal but I've had water pump go and also the haldex pump. I accept it as pay to play etc bit annoying having both go almost same time though. Anyway enjoy your car and I'm just unlucky so I highly doubt you will have any issues.

Thx MP, yep that sounds about right, still not too bad for cruising.. my polo with the 5sp sits at 3000 @110k

At how many km's did both the pumps go? I'm sure you can retrofit these sorts of 7.5 parts to the 7 when required. Hoping theses bugs have been ironed out by my16

My Haldex started to show signs of failing at around 35k km. Traction control coming on whenever taking off fast 5k rpm+ in first I firstly assumed it was my tyres which were getting bald. The water pump failed at 40k km mark and at that time I swapped front tyres to MP4s they grip so well that masked haldex issue for a while. Plus I rarely get change to drive car "hard" so wasn't really issue daily driving.

I'm not sure when they updated the Water pump from plastic part to metal which latest is and prevents cracking/failures. I have latest improved one installed now so shouldn't fail again. The haldex pump failed due to filter getting clogged up and metal shavings in oil. Not sure what caused that as had haldex service at 30k mark. Whether it was slowing failing due to software glitch in older models or not. Anyway I'd say with early regular maintenance shouldn't be an issue. I left mine 15k km before getting it looked at so possibly if I had it checked when I first noticed maybe could have done software update and clean filter and saved pump failure but who knows.

Water pump replacement is around $1500 and haldex pump around $1000. Not nice but not end of world considering the performance the car has at stage 2 levels at bargain price when comparing performance levels to cars like RS3, A45, M3 etc.

Great reply but almost all too every day occurrence, having met a haldex fail at 35k on a 7R makes me want to get mine checked at 10k

I did miss having a 6th gear in the polo, time will tell if i'll miss the 7th in DSG

How many RPM does the MK7 6sp DSG idle at around 100kms? might be incorrect but i'm certain it was about 2000rpm
Def days I miss a 7spd in my GTI.

After a few days of driving I see the argument for the 7 speed, but its not so bad.. Unfortunately its hard to identify these things with a 15 minute test drive. The 6 Speed can be a little clunky on the od occasion but its fairly smooth once you master the brake accelerator clutch action.

The 6 speed isn't a bad gearbox. It's just the 7 speed is better. Unfortunately car manufacturers keep on drip feeding out improvements to make us want to buy the newer/better/updated car even though the one we are driving is perfectly OK for the job. Case in point Mk7 vs. Mk7.5. The DQ380 has been around sionce 2014 but only made its way into the Golf for 7.5 update. Otherwise there would have been no reason for everyone to update their cars.

They had to “test” it in the Audi S3 first, to keep the price premium for Audi. Same with the virtual cockpit. Now both are in the Golf.

Tuning the mk7 makes the gearbox foibles even more noticeable in the 6 speed. Obviously why APR and the like have a DSG tune as well. Add a JB1 on your Golf and you’ll see what I mean

Was meaning to ask, is the APR tune on these R's switchable like on the Polo using the cruise control stalk?

Do they usually come with 4 programs? Previous seller had no idea how to do it

Well I picked up my R today and I have to say the seats on the Grid are much better than I remember them. I still prefer the leather and would normally option them but I stand by my pick of going for a Grid over a Mk7. I'm really stoked with it, great car, and a bit improvement over the Highline.

Congrats. Next level performance compared with the Highline! Wait until it gets a few kms under the belt and frees up. Very cool!!
