Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Damn right.

It's an interesting colour that has real depth to it, although mine didn't really 'pop' until I had it opti-coated. From some angles (particularly under artificial light) it has a real purple hue, while under indirect sunlight it's a fairly standard blue.

      Love the pictures !

I need to take my post whoring over to ozaudi and ask questions (I have a growing list that the dealer can't answer).

Test drive tomorrow morning which will either seal the deal or break it. They have organised a customers car in the colour we want to come in so we can see what it looks like.

I find it interesting that some things standard on our R are options on the S3.

ozAudi's not bad; it's nowhere near as active as the busiest areas of VWW though unfortunately. Loads of threads with a tiny handful of posts only. Feel free to ask on here or PM me if you have anything specific you want to know; obviously I have one, and my dad has an S-tronic Sportback.

There's not much standard on the R that's optional on the S3, whereas the latter has a ton of standard inclusions that you can't even get on an R. The main inclusions you get for free on the R are adaptive dampers, hill hold assist and a rear centre armrest - all of which are options on the S3.

Our R has the dip down left mirror in reverse and heated rear view mirrors (options in the S3 I thought ?)
The fold down arm rest as you say with cargo access
More storage areas incl sunglass holder

          Minor things

Rather than clog up this thread which is in the MKVI R thread, I'll flick some messages if that's OK ?

I should probably close this since my choice is pretty much a done deal.

The mirror dip in reverse is included as part of the folding mirrors option, but you can enable the dipping using VCDS even without the folding mirror pack (as I've done; works a treat).

Feel free to shoot me a PM with any questions!

Test drive done, deposit down on an S3.

Does make the R seem somewhat agricultural ....

Keep in mind it is also 5 year old technology, the mk7 golf makes the mk6 feel the same

We took a MKVII R for a test drive today as well. Not a car I could live with.

I actually preferred our R although the MKVII was indeed faster and had more gear.

Yes I found using synthetics with the blue was much better than waxes although i like the depth of wax. I used nanolex which is opti coat by any other name, I top it up with red mist every 3-4 months just to get that pop back

Will be interesting to see what sort of job the pre delivery detailers do on an Audi (the R was actually pretty good).

I'm expecting rail dust, swirls and polish marks

Gotta start at a low point.

Time to find a good local detailer.

I've spent a lot of time behind the wheel of Mk7 Golfs (I've driven every model), and yet never found myself thinking it's a special car in the way I loved my Mk6. The interior in general felt a little less cocooning and less sporty, and the R's performance - whilst excellent - felt a bit synthetic, and the exhaust (+ Soundaktor) got tired pretty quick.

Dutch77 updated from a Mk6 GTI (APR Stage 2) to a Mk7 GTI, but like me never really bonded with it; he's now swapped it for an S3 sedan as well.

In Sydney, many Audi cars go through pre-delivery detailing at a facility shared by many dealers (I think it's run by Audi Australia), and so PD is pretty good. Here in SA the sole Audi dealer is the same company I bought my last GTI from, but the paint was in markedly better condition than the VW too, so maybe they just put better people on the job for the Audis. I've not heard too much about the QLD dealers though, and regardless, it always pays to know a great detailer!

As I said to a person via pm, going from the S3 back to the R I realised how much the R feels inside like a people mover/bus.

                            Lots of big glass.

The lower roofline, whilst tighter in the back for headroom in the S3 makes it feel more sporty. Wife noticed it too.

My days of a hatch are over.

I swap routinely between my S3 and a Mk5 Golf - the differences are stark. That's not to say that I don't enjoy the Golf in its way - it's got its place and it's a really nice car to drive when you want a solid, upright, roomy hatchback - which may not be all that often.

Correct, I relished every drive in the Mk6. The Mk7 was undoubtedly superior in most areas - and would have been quicker had I been interested in tinkering with it, but I'm not really missing it so much. Not bonding is a good way to put it.

Adam knows I considered a few alternatives - mostly different to the polled cars here as I was open to trading outright performance/handling for a bit more size - and did consider the R wagon for the boot.

Good luck Candyman, doubt you'll regret the move.
