  • Really Bad Tyre Noise above 50 kmh

My Golf has developed a real lot of tyre noise in the last year. It is seriously loud, and starts at 50 kmh and gets louder in proportion to speed. At 100 kmh it is really loud.
Now i was sure it was the tyres just wearing out as they have done 40,000 kms , but i put on new tyres last week and the sound is still there.
It is not engine or transmission as putting the Golf into neutral and rolling does not change the sound.

I have tried swerving left and right, to load the wheel bearings, but there is no change to the sound when i do this.

The wheels are 17" Denver .

Any ideas ? I think i will have to take it to a mechanic unfortunately.

    Wheel alignment?

What make / model tyres did you fit?

Mk6 Golf with 40,000km? it would be unusual.

It might just be the roads & tyre type.

I fitted new RE050A last week and the reduction in noise from my old RE050A was amazing... on my normal commute. Yesterday I was in other parts of Sydney & I was almost going deaf with the road noise. I'm thinking it's a wheel alignment issue - certainly the inner edge wear on the old tyres points to it.

I don't think RE050A are the quietist tyre in the world though.

It will be interesting to see what the OP runs.

          Kumho KU39.
Old tyres are worn uniformly, but i think i need to try a wheel alignment.

              runs.
The old tyres were a cheap Dunlop, the tyre noise is very very loud, at 100kmh i cant turn up the radio loud enough to drown it out.
I am starting to expect the unlikely culprit being wheel bearings.
I have given up and booked it in to dealer next week, will report back.

Many tyres get noisy when they are wearing out. I would expect new kumhos to be quieter than old Dunlops.
The kumhos are $390 ea. rrp the Dunlops $175.
You have something against kumhos ??

And by cheap Dunlops i meant they were cheap dunlop tyres not the good expensive dunlops.

You can tell if it is a wheel bearing by seeing if the hub is hot after a run.

I don't think they are generally very good tyres - I've had them before.

$390 for 225/45r17 KU39 - pull the other one it plays jingle bells. They are $145 each at my local tyre store.

Michelin PS3 & BS Potenza S001 are $185 and worth the extra spend
