  • Engine oil change Golf VI 90TSI

    G'day gents,

I've been a member for a while, but very quiet.

I've had my Golf since new '09, and it's been a real gem (touch wood !)

I've run out of time to get the car serviced before heading out on a long drive, so I thought I'd change the oil and front brake pads myself, I used to be very handy in my youth, so skills shouldn't be an issue !!

If this has been posted before I apologize.

So I imagine that I will need about 4 Litres of oil (any recommendations)
A new sump plug (does anyone know what size it is and if it's torx ?)
A new oil filter (does this require a special tool ?)

Any advice to do the job right ?

For the brakes does anyone know the minimum disk thickness. It has done 90K and it's still on it's first brake pads in the front.

    Your help greatly appreciated

    VW happy

Any VW approved oil at Supercrap There is Castrol and Penrite oils that qualify under either 502/505 for petrol or 504.507 for both petrol and diesel Must have the APPROVED wording on the bottle .

Buy a genuine filter at a dealer. also a sump plug it is about $4.50

How far are you going to need to do brake pads.

Genuine oil filter is about $25. You'll need a filter claw, or strap to undo it.

Sump plug, which you only need a 19mm spanner for, is $4.50.

Budget about $80 for the oil. Easiest to get hold of is Penrite 5W30 Enviro+. Use a small funnel to pour it. The hole in the baffle under the rocker cover is tiny.

Genuine discs are about $100ea, and the pads are about $120 for the set. New wear sensors, bolts, and clips are included in the kit.

Also at 90,000, you'd be looking at doing an air filter $45, and a pollen filter $40. Brake fluid may also be due, depending on when it was done last.

Pollen filter is under/behind the glovebox.

            Plugs get done every 60K.

Thanks for that. I'll get the parts today and get to it on the weekend. Thanks everyone for your help. I might enjoy getting my hands dirty again.

Is there a handy link where I can get service information per Km.

I got Repco's brand of pollen filter, compared to flimsy VW it's made a lot better. First time for everything, lol.

What about the air filter ? Is that better to get original ?

Yeah when it comes to things like that, it is best, I'm usually a stickler for OEM, but I found the Pollen filter was a better product.
Any other filters - go OEM.

The OEM is flimsy for a reason. If it weren't, you wouldnt be able to get it out of the cavity it lives in in some models.

LOL, I'm not going to argue with VW Fanboi's, To me the Aftermarket one was built better and slid in nicely, the stocker felt crap in my GTI and mother in laws TSI.

LOL, All good, been a Mechanic going on 20 years now, worst customers have always been Euro owners, especially with a tiny bit of knowledge. Not putting you in this category, just a general comment, I see you're a mechanic going by your signature.

I'm a fan of using OEM a lot of the times, but sometimes the reason there is an aftermarket part is it's a genuine upgrade or better option. I liked how the filter felt, nice and strong, whereas the stock one nearly fell apart pulling it out.

Not trying to argue with anyone though, just chatting
