Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Adaptive Chassis Control (DCC) Issues on a GTI

Hi All, I have DCC on my 2010 GTI. From about 60,000KM I noticed the ride started to become very harsh on the front left and to a lesser extent on the front right. On sharp bumps it tends to crash through, and on high frequency bumps it feels like the damper is losing control.

I mentioned this when I went in for the 60,000KM service, but in typical VW fashion, since there was no fault code, there is nothing wrong.
Ive now done 95,000KM and its driving me nuts, the car rides like ****. It was not until I test drive a Focus ST last week that I realised how bad the ride in my car is.

Has anyone else had issues with dampers and had them replaced? How was the issue diagnosed? Im thinking of taking the car to Pedders to get a report, im positive something will show up.

At 95k maybe the dampers are worn/leaking.

Crappy crashy ride is the result.

    Dampers are consumable.

Mine were gone at under 100k (mk5 GTI).

Unless it's free i wouldn't bother with a report. And if it's free, I bet they would say it's worn and needs replacement! lol

Pedders are more interested in turning a quick buck rather than give you an honest opinion.

If there is an electronic fault with the dampers, they go to a default setting, which is 'Normal' from memory.

May not be the same story if they've had an internal seal failure, or the like.

Would be worth checking the travel sensors on the LCAs.

Since I mentioned it to VW at 60,000KM, im not accepting that its a wear/consumable issue. Also, given that 90% of my driving is on Freeways, at 60,000KM, they would have had the wear of about 20 to 30,000KM. Im still on my original brake pads!

Ill give Pedders a miss and open a ticket with VWA to get someone to have a proper look, not a "dealership" look.
Ill see if VAGCOM has anything I can log that is damper related.

You could probably log the current supply to the solenoids/magnets, however might be abit hard to tell if that is working correctly. As the guys have said only failed shocks will give you those kind of symptoms, however if there is no leaks and no faults then there is not much VW will do unless you reproduce the fault for them.

Maybe try to get them to organise back-to-back roadtests with a similar vehicle to compare. Also VW do not look at shock absorbers as a consumable item in regards to leaks/failure.
