  • Upgrade from Polo GTI 6r to Golf R Mk6?

    Hi everyone,
Just looking for some advice and opinions.
I currently own a 2012 Polo GTI 6r and I'm seriously considering upgrading to a used Golf R Mk6 within the next 6 months.
I've had my Polo for 7 months and I'm getting somewhat bored with it. As a student, the Polo GTI was the ceiling of what I could purchase at the time. With a bit more saved since then, I'm in the position to be able to purchase a Golf R with the sale of the Polo. It's had a handful of tasteful modifications from the previous owner and myself, although I'm not very keen into throwing anymore money at it. I'd rather put my time and effort into a more desirable Golf R.
How great is the Golf R, those that have experienced it? Do many of you still rate it compared to the Golf R 7? Is this a purchase you would consider if you were in my positioning? Or would you look elsewhere other than the Golf R Mk6?

it is a very subjective question. at the end of the day, it is your decision and depends on your funding capacity, purpose of use, goals, etc...

for a reference: golf 7 r is lighter, faster and in stock form can achieve a modified golf 6 r lap times at the nurburgring. see

The Mk6 R has the potential to be vastly faster, depending on your ambitions and your wallet. Just look at what APR have done with their cars. It's a great platform for modification and is a rock-solid drive.

The R is also generally considered to be a much better long-term reliability bet - the DSG is not a hand grenade, and the EA113 doesn't usually burn much oil. There are no major gotchas to look out for.

But of course they drive completely differently, and are aimed at different buyers. Drive one if you haven't already, and make the decision based on your preferences and your finances. I'm not sure how a Mk7 R is relevant given that's not a consideration for you.
