Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Liqi Moly Intake De Carbon

Just a quick question on this product and thoughts. I just used some today using the same method as the suburu upper engine cleaner. Anybody else experienced their car not starting after? wouldn't even turn over, just did one click and then silence. Thought I'd broken my car. Luckily it jump started down the driveway then coughed and spluttered for a few minutes with lots of white smoke. Seemed to do a better job than the suburu stuff as I get hardly any smoke with that stuff and the long bendy nozzle and multi direction squirt is good. Faults were multiple misfire but the car drove well. Will check codes again when I get home from work tomorrow.

Hope this stuff has done no damage, perhaps next time I should ask peoples opinion first.

I did push the straw in a long way and it sprays in 4 directions. Perhaps I should of not used half a can either and used the most when the engine was running. Did give off an awful smell and has made the inside of my tail pipes black. Thanks for the quick reply. I almost had a heart attack when it wouldn't start.

It took a number of long cranks to get started after using this stuff. I also used the Nulon brand and it was similar.

Did much gunk come out the back? Ive been thinking of using something like this myself. Cars done 85k and has never had a clean, its either this or actually pull the manifold and give it a proper scrub!

Having seen one first hand I doubt that spraying anything in there will do much if you have left it un attended for more than 50K.

The one I saw was well caked at 100k, it didn't get that way over night.

Only way to clean it properly is manifold off and do each cyl and work along with valves closed and heaps of care. pulling the manifold off can sometimes drag out the injectors and this damages the Teflon seals, recommend buying 4 seal kits and inlet manifold gasket.

I agree the only way to get it properly clean is to remove the manifold and hand clean. Just letting people know that this stuff has seemed to have done more than the Subaru Upper engine cleaner. At 105000 klm I got a little puff of smoke, same at 115000. Using this Liqui Moly stuff I had to jump start the car and I got lots of smoke, multiple misfires in cylinders 1 and 2 and the inside of my tail pipes are caked in black soot. So far I have no side effects and I'm having it serviced tomorrow and changing the plugs too.

Once I get time and money I will be seeing just how bad my build up is. I only have slight symptoms of carbon build up which include a slight rough idle when cold with a choppy acceleration at low rpm's and light throttle. Once the car is warmed up the car seems to runs fine.

What I can say about Liqui Moly its a really good product, used some today on a TDI, slightly different stuff but whats good is it doesn't break off chunks, it melts it, great for TDis. TFSI is another story but still, great product. I used it in the UK for years, its only been over here for 6yrs.
