Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Sunroof Opening Randomly

    Hi,
Lately I ve been experiencing my sunroof randomly opening by itself...not fully opening but rather tilting fully... I would lock my car and come to it and it would be tilted (I assume power to it is still on after the car is locked for sometime) It doesn't have a specific time it just happens so random when I drive or when the car is stationary...I mentioned it last time when I had the service but the guys told me there was no faults (which I knew there wouldn't be since I can do my own scan)...In any case does anyone know what the possible issue is? Is it sunroof is it the switch...?

Mine was doing similar things last year, mostly when I was driving and I know of another forum member with the same problem, it has since stopped, so it may have been a dirty sensor or just a bad contact some where, it has not happen for many months now, most likely jinx myself now.

could be that but its annoying it does happen...I have noticed it usually happens in summer than in winter times due to heat....do you know if the other forum member fixed it?

Unknown, he never posted if he had the problem fixed or if it fixed it self like mine.

Have you tried greasing the tracks? The VW's come with pinch sensors that sometimes decide to open on themselves. Another option could be a dirty switch, might try taking it out, then apart and use some electrical contact cleaner on it.

I had a problem with the sunroof last week, greasing the track seems to have fixed the problem.

I read somewhere (too much reading ) this is reasonable common and is switch related, but if you are not getting the vehicle maintained by the dealer then a lub of the tracks and a clean of the drain channel are both recommended, if the sunroof random openings happen often then I would be looking to replace the switch not a hard or long task but a few $$s.

can anyone advise me from etka about part number for the dome lights? or does the switch have a separate part number itself. Have been to a dealer in adelaide quoted me 500 dollars for install job and a part and I got told the whole dome light part would have to be installed rather than just the switch (I think the word is potentiometer)..I see some sold in the US but I can't confirm if those units are the same as the ones we have here (due to a different market)...
