  • Lug bolt Plastic Caps not fitting! Mk6 GTI

Hi all, just put on some 19" talladega replicas on my mk6 golf gti - used the same bolts etc. However, the plastic caps that go over the bolts no longer fit, too large! Any solution, will VW dealer have smaller caps?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, first time I have come across this. Thanks

I'd say your problem lies with the fact that the wheels are replicas.

There's probably a nicer-looking wheel bolt you can use, though.

Wheels were on a 2008 Passat and had no problem with the plastic covers. It seems the Golf's plastic covers are a bit thicker than the Passat's?

I think you need to explain what you have done better.

You say you used the same bolts - if you did the caps should still fit the bolts unless the recess in the new wheel is too small. (because that's the thing that has changed)

That's what you sound like you are saying.

Sorry, should have explained it better. Yes, the recess in the wheel itself has changed, it seems like this is a common problem for people who get a lot of the aftermarket wheels. I assume a good wheel shop will have various sizes of plastic caps to fit?

New bolts without caps is usually the answer - possibly with a "allen key" type head if the recess in the wheel is particularly small. Either chrome or some type of "anodised" finish or simply machined with some care.

If you are using OEM VW bolts with aftermarket wheels you also need to have a good look at the bolt seats to ensure you are using the right type compatible with the bolt.

Have you checked the wheel bolt cover bearing play is within specifications?
