Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Oil question.

    Hi Guys,
Went for a road trip a few days ago and the oil warning light came on. Unfortunately I was not within striking distance of a VW dealer so used this oil to top:

CASTROL EDGE 5W-30 A3/B4 | Castrol For You

Only needed about 700ml should I be worried about using this or should be okay for another 4000k's until next oil change?

    Cheers
    Simon

It's OK for top up, some will say it's OK to use, I will not argue with that, but would only use VW504.00 approved oil.
Castrol Edge in AU is not VW504.00 oil like in EU is.

GTIs are definitely 5W-30. Castrol says the oil I used is ok for top up but just wanted to check with those in the know. Transporter, you think it will be okay for another 4000 until service?

        Cheers

I needed to top up so thanks for the post, so I rang VW and they quoted this as the right stuff. It is not long life as it is only 502 as Transporter has already flagged. But it is fine for a top up and more than fine for 4000 service
