Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MK6 Golf Windscreen quotes

In need of a new windscreen and since there wasn't much info on the subject when I searched here last night I thought I'd share a few prices that I've come across so far (note these are all subject to change of course). I don't have the insurance option for this but will probably add it now.

    O'Brien Glass
$698 fitted - aftermarket RLS (rain + light sensor)

Instant Windscreens (recommended by forum member)
    $575 fitted - aftermarket RLS

    RACV AutoGlass
$548 fitted with Bronze member discount - aftermarket
~$1500 fitted for genuine VW product

National Windscreens (recommended by a friend who salvages VW's)
$695 fitted for genuine VW windscreen (they didn't mention any aftermarket option so I guess they specialise in OEM).

All prices are for fitting onsite in the SE suburbs (~45km away from Melbourne). I've just cancelled my O'Brien booking (they were the first ones I called) and am now going with National Windscreens.

    Hope this helps others

Yes - much better to go the OEM route. Also worth asking your insurer whether they will replace with OEM (some will try and get away with aftermarket units).

Also once you have an aftermarket windscreen in, you'll never get it replaced under insurance with OEM.

I thought I would add some updated information to this thread, due to a stone chip which cracked over night I was in the market for a new windscreen for a 118 TSI.
Doing the ring around on the Sunshine Coast over the new year period was hopeless to get something before heading back to Sydney so ended up getting home without any worries.
Wanted a real windscreen not aftermarket so tried the dealer first, quoted just under $550 which I thought was okay, however the dealers fitter was not available for 2 weeks (on holidays) so I had to ring around the major auto glass fitters.
Tried the "O" saying I have already sourced the windscreen and just wanted it fitted - $300 They had an aftermarket model also for $550. They stated that they mainly deal with insurance claims.
Ended up with NRMA glass (Yes they also do windscreen now !) $150 fitted and will do it at the dealers. So all up some change from $700.
Of course I don't have the windscreen cover ticked so insurance was not an option.

Forgot to add my update - mythik did his best to put me off National Windscreens but I figured my friend has used them multiple times without problems and I'm in a different location to mythik so should get a different branch. Shane from Pakenham came over and did a perfect job, very professional and a top bloke.

He mentioned the gel in the rain sensors on old older cars can sometimes become less effective after 8-10 years (not that mine hasn't been sparodic from the get-go) and that they sell the small replacement part needed for $5.

I simply showed you my bad experience. They did an awful job. Too much adhesive used and it spilled out all over the place. Terrible.

I'm very glad you had a great experience with a different franchise owner. Just looking out for you Ryan.

                Yep I know

Same family member wanted to move my car out of the driveway (blocking their car). It's a steep one, and despite my reminder to do a handbrake start, I hear him do a nice burnout as he panics when the (DSG) clutch goes in... asked him to buy me new tyres as well now

Had front windscreen fitted by NRMA Glass (finally) must say if I didn't know better I would think it was factory fitted. Windscreen fitting has come a long way since I last need it done 12 years back.
