Well the wife happened to modify the rear bar by backing into a 4WD that was parked in our driveway. How does this happen with rear sensors? Well the slope of the driveway actually makes it difficult to see behind and the front sensors go off because they sense the front of the driveway.
Anyway after the shock of it and forgiving my wife (she was more upset than me) I called my mate who has his own panel shop to do the repair. The rear bar is torn in a few places and pretty much not repairable. After a few calls he quoted me $780 for the replacement bar and $350 for the paint work for the bar.
I was pretty ok with that albeit I'm sure a commodore bar would be half the price but that's what you get for owning a European car and I'm not complaining about that. With an $800 excess I decided not to claim and just pay for the repairs myself.
To my surprise my mate called today to tell me the new bar had been superseded and the new price was not $1100 for the bar because it needed four new mounting brackets instead of 3 that the original bar has.
I find it strange that a rear bar would be upgraded on a car that is being run out. Oh well I've have not put a claim through insurance and will hopefully have the car repaired in a week or so. I hate driving it around damaged.
