Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Air con not working 103tdi

    Hi,

My parents have a 2010 103tdi, and recently they started to complain that the AC wasn't as cold as it used to be, I thought they were being paranoid so I swapped cars with them this weekend and wow its definitely stuffed. It starts off being mildly cold but after about 30-45 mins of driving it just blows out hot air. It also has a small coolant leak, which requires a top up every few months. VW could not locate the leak last service 6 months ago (before the AC issues).

Does anyone have any idea's? I know this was a really common problem in the MK5, but didnt realise Mk6's had issues with AC as well, I called up my local vw dealer who quoted 3k for a compressor

Before anyone says take it back under warranty, their car is out of warranty as its a 2010 model with 125k (the warranty in 2010 was limited to 100,000kms).

    Cheers,
    Jesse

    Hey Jesse,

I would be very hesitant to just throw in a compressor, i know we did a sh*t load of compressors for a while but still i would be wanting to be sure before i coughed up that sort of cash.

Can you shoot me through your vin along with any other problems in regards to the air con system. Like are all the vents and positioning motors working correctly etc. I know that if the system detects a fault with the a/c system like low gas or a pressure sensor fault it will disable the system and not allow it to work, as a precautionary measure to protect the compressor in case of low refrigerant oil etc.

      Hi all,

As an update: I wrote to VW Australia, who agreed to cover the car under goodwill not bad considering the car now has almost 140k. Maybe vw isn't evil after all. A new compressor goes in on Monday..

        Nice result, good outcome!

Unacceptable that the owner should put up with a malfunctioning A/C system and bear significant repair costs after a relatively short period, in this day and age.
