  • power steering getting heavier...

    Hey quick question -

    Has anyone noticed their power steering getting heavier with the age of the vehicle? I know the fluid should be changed at some interval, but my golf is just over 2 years old, with only about 19000km on the clock.

    It could be my imagination, but the steering kind of feels slightly heavier than it used to. Seems fine at regular driving speeds - its at slow parking speeds that I notice it. I've checked tyre pressures. All seems ok. Had a quick squiz under the bonnet but couldn't really see any power steering fluid resevoir visible. Will scour the manual again tonight to try and find where it is.

    I will probably take it to dealer for a quick checkup but thought I'd ask anyway...

    It's electrical power steering, no fluid reservoir.

      Tyre wear.Less tread=heavier steering.
      Whenever you put a new set of tyres on,it all feels lighter for a while.

          No No No, the washer fluid reservoir has been overfilled causing too much weight over the front axle and hence turn in pressure. This has been found to exhibit itself more when pressing on causing understeer on corner entry but you will find that even given the extra weight up front the car is still keen to follow your inputs to tighten the line mid corner. I doubt even reasonably priced Euro’s would be able to match the turn response of a golf given an overfilled washer fluid reservoir .

            Pfft, the real killer is constantly driving the car on the right, causing uneven Tyre-wear. Try driving from the left seat for a bit, it's a bit of a stretch but it's worth the savings!







            But honestly check your tyre pressure and tread.

              Its most likely the tyre wear. Less tread = more rubber on the road = more friction I suppose. Can't believe I've nearly worn down a set of tyres in less than 20000km...

                  Keep your tyre pressures up to around 38PSI.

                  If they're low, you'll go through tyres like they're going out of style.
