  • DSG Shifting delay in S-Mode - too much redline

    Hi All

    Just a question, don't know if it's a problem.

When in S-Mode and 1st gear, and i'm 'required' to give it, the DSG does not shift to 2nd until it reaches about 7,000 rpm - long after it out of the good power band. Then it pops to 2nd with a good little pull.

Is it normal it delays the shift so late? If that's the case then I guess i'll have to use the paddles next time.

    Cheers

Depends on how hard your foot is on the gas sometimes, if you bring the foot back a bit as it revs higher it can delay the shift. A few companies have DSG tunes available that claim to improve D mode so it doesn't upshift too early, while also making S mode more usable by getting it to shift sooner.

That said, if you're ever on a mountain road trying to keep up with a fast 4WD WRX or something S mode does help keep you in the power band (I drive in M a lot but don't always downshift as much as might be optimal).

You guys think a APR or GIAC would change this for the better somewhat?

Probably, I'm at least waiting for a new mechatronics unit first, then have to decide if $900+ is worth it (I've lived with it for this long...)

This is normal, and the tuned cars I've driven exhibit the same behaviour as well. Short of having your DSG tuned (as opposed to getting an ECU tune), I don't think you're going to see any change to the gearbox's behaviour in this regard. If you don't like it revving out when you're giving it the beans, use the paddle or the manual shift on the gear lever when you're ready to shift.

Or, spend the $ on a Custom Code or APR DSG tune.

My tests have proven that, in a straight line, "S" is quicker and more consistent, especially with the launch control. I find that sometimes in "M" if you get too much wheelspin in first and it redlines, it'll override into second before you've regained traction. This kills acceleration.

Yeah I had that happen to me one out twice last year, might have been the start of clutch issues too. I've read others say how you should shift up a bit before redline when doing quick starts but my car doesn't like shifting up with near-max torque running through the gearbox, get a bit of a thud, so I try and avoid it, or lift up the right foot a bit before shifting now.
