  • 18 inch tyre pressures

Sticker says 260 front and 300 rear. Thats about 36 and 43. Checked mine as I read here that sometimes the delivered pressures are high. Set them to 34 all round to see what happened for my normal commute on roughish roads. Noticeably smoother and seems like less tyre rumble on coarse surfaces.
Given that the rear is lighter I summised that 34 rear would not cause adverse wear but wondering what others may think of that? Comments or advice?

I'm also running 40 psi all round on my R

Assume it could be different for FWD however. Was on my GTI. Will be different again for your GTD

Look on the inside of your fuel flap.

by reliable, you mean calibrated right. you could be lucky and buy an elcheapo guage and fluke that it was spot on, then again you could spend 40 bucks, and it would not be unreasonable to get readings of +/- 2psi at around 40psi. Ideally, you'd get one guage calibrated at 40psi, then all other guages could be checked against it.

I run 40psi of nitrogen all round on my MKIV R32. But probably best to see what your sticker says

Sadly a bit more than $40, but it is calibrated ..... from the manufacturer's website

"Designed to meet EC standards and constructed in die cast aluminium for lightweight ease of use. Dual scale standard calibration is 0 - 138 p.s.i. and 0 - 9.6 bar.

Magnified linear scale is to a guaranteed accuracy. Each gauge is supplied complete with a certificate of calibration and full installation operation and service instructions. Packaged in a robust, easy to display colour box. Manufactured in England to the highest quality standards."

They sound like pressures for full load to me.

Are there no pressures listed for half load?

The fuel flap lists three pressure ranges for the three main tyre sizes and after deciphering the symbols it does list half load as 240. The sticker is a table and I was reading it as different pressures for the different type sizes, but it is for different loads. Wow, gunna try that on the way to work.

I've done 4500 now with the full load pressures. In fact the rear were a pound or two higher, no wonder it was slightly rougher than necessary. Thanks for the prompt.

Did 60 Kms today with the recommended pressure for unloaded. Really very happy dubber now. Still have the nice controlled feeling with comfort. 43 in the unloaded back-end was not good.

The higher the pressure the less contact area, so there must be a pressure point where the grip reduces and contact is compromised by tire skip. Contact area in Contact area (sq inches)=Axel load (pounds)/tire pressure (psi).

For my GTi on 18" rims it was 260kpa ( est at 37 lb ) for all tyres for highway driving. Didn't have an issue for a few months then one day driving from Sydney to Canberra the low tyre pressure warning light came on. Inspected the tyres all looked ok but just to be on the safe side drove the last 75km @ 80km/hr. *groan*

Checked the tyres when cold no loss of pressure but warning light stayed on. I booked the car into the local VW dealer and was advised issue caused by having the pressure too high. The recommended pressure was to run 34 lb/ sq in all round.

Since then have no further issues with the warning light and the ride feels better.
