Golf GTI or Scirocco R - Convenience v Fun?

Looking to get a car soon and I cannot decide?!

Golf GTI with 18s, Roof & Leather - 5 door
or
Scirocco R more power and looks but No roof no leather - 3 door + price premium obviously

Love both cars but should i trade off some luxury and convenience for a sexy fast funbox? or stay in the middle and be a little smarter?!

Any opinions appreciated! and I think the GTI would have better resale? (green scirocco's will drag the prices down)

Why not a Golf R?

Depends on what you need the car for. Carry passengers often? Golf. Don't? Scirocco.

Golf R is nice - but rarely any in the country and is not getting built again until Dec/Jan? And even more pricey as its so rare now.

Scirocco still has some stock here and there, GTI as well

I would say the GTI as it has what you want and can be remapped to make similar power.

a 5dr GTI with 18s, sunroof and leather must be getting close to $50k yea?

Another point to note is the Scirocco comes with DCC, Xenons and parking sensors as standard.

Scirocco is better in every aspect except if you use the rear seat on a regular basis.

Nope. Coming from a MK6 GTI with an APR tune, it is still not even close to being in the same category as the Roc. Roc is better (and faster still) on every level.

I hate the seats in the Scirocco, but then again i'm not exactly sold on the leather in the GTI. That is the immediate thing I notice between the Golf and Scirocco anyway.
Tune or not, the Scirocco is a beautiful thing to thrash by all accounts as a result of its bigger footprint on the road. So if you're a spirited driver then surely you have to go the Scirocco.
But as per everyone, depends on what you want. If it were me though, i'd feel a little jealous every time I pulled up next to a Scirocco at the lights in my GTI (and probably annoyed at myself if I knew that price wasn't an issue). But maybe that's just me.

Price-wise, I can see how buying a 'Roc would be as painful as buying a Polo Gti this time last year:

Go the Scirocco, because every time you drive it will be a little bit more special. And every time you see its reflection driving along you'll know you made the right choice

But in all seriousness the scirocco is drop dead gorgeous and as stated above a better driver. So if it was me i would pick the Scirocco

These cars are quite different at the end of the day; your lifestyle and use-case should allow you to decide without too much difficulty. Asking for a populous view will only get you responses based on others' circumstances and the value they place on various criteria - good to know, but not necessarily relevant.

If you want a 2dr performance coupe, the 'Roc is the way to go. If you want a hot hatch that is still a hatch (so, bigger boot, easier passenger access, higher centre of gravity, less exotic looks), go the Golf.

To my mind, these are the major differences:

Scirocco:

• Stronger performance and handling
• Much firmer ride
• Far more exclusive
• Very distinctive styling - polarises opinion!
• More Mk5-derived interior styling

Golf:

• Smaller turbo makes for a nippier drive, but is ultimately quite a bit less powerful
• Handling reflects the softer suspension tune and higher centre of gravity
• Far more versatile
• Quite common, and less likely to impress the neighbours
• Fresher interior styling (instrument cowling etc)

I would suggest that both represent excellent value, and will be on par (or very close) in terms of resale and reliability.

So - what's important to you in a car?

Good responses so far - appreciated them, but I guess most of the things I have already considered.
Price wise, Roc's are probably harder to get a discount as opposed to the GTI, so thats a key - better value for money?

And obviously the Rocco looks hot, but so do the GTI in white with Detroit's

Currently I drive an IS250 - obviously 4-door but prior to that 2-doors all the way such as 350Z and Integra Type R....
So got the itch to get back to some power.

Don't have a fam or anything, but once you have 4 doors you sorta get used to it? Also don't usually drive too many people around.

Sounds like a no brainer? BUT the thing that bugs me about the Rocco is no leather and no roof... been so used to it and may feel a bit weird spending $50+ and having neither of them??

I think i'll get quotes for both and see the price variance between the two and make my choice!? I'm leasing it as well so resale to is important!

Likely the choice would be a Rising blue Roc (white is pretty much unavailable, although that would be the first choice) or Candy White GTI

I reckon the ROC is going to have better resale value because of exclusivity, GTIs are like bums, everyone has one. However you are going to be able to get your hands on a GTI much easier than a ROC because of demand.

Comparing a Golf to a Lexus is chalk and cheese, the class difference is significant. One is a wannabe Euro Lux and the other is a Euro Hot hatch. Having an issue with leather seats in the ROC because you are used to it seems lame as an excuse, you either want another lease hack to get around in or you want to get into a unique car with cred, all the jewelry is secondary.

Get over wanting to make a statement about who you want people to think you are and get your head around the driving experience you actually want. With that as the real issue here the ROC is the answer you should have come up with ( given budget isn't in picture) to start with

Best thing is to take each for a test drive and judge it for yourself. You will (at least I'd hope) notice that the Roc is much more responsive, fast, fun, and better looking than the GTI (not that the GTI is a bad car as it isn't).

From there, if you can justify the price difference compared to the feeling you get, then go for the Roc. If not, get the GTI. Either way they're nice cars.
