  • Golf R - False Neutral...Help Required

    Howdy All,

    Hoping someone can help me....

If anyone has had their DSG firmware updated via TPI 2026959/2 or another TPI to fix the false neutral issue - i would be interested to know what Part Number / Software Level you are now running.
The DSG in my Golf R (MY12) has the following firmware
    ------------------------------
    Part No 02E300013S
    Software Level 2734
    ------------------------------
Understand this information is not readily available so probably only those with VAGCOM or have spoken to their dealer after the fix can help.
According to the dealer, my car is running the 'latest' firmware but as the car was built >7months ago now i'd expect some more recent code to be available.
I have recordered 3 x false neutrals since owning the car - all at low speed
Appreciate any feedback you can offer here.
Just want my next trip to the dealer to be the last in regards to this matter and get on with enjoying the car!

    Thanks in advance

    Steve

Just keep bugging your local dealer or try another dealer. Just make sure it's not Austral VW! I kept bugging them about the problem and they kept ignoring it and then finally the DSG died altogether. :/ For me the false neutral occurred in "s" or manual but 'd' was usually ok but very jerky.

Got told of this issue from my service guy today, according to him there is no fix yet.
However he mentioned it happened when the dsg gearbox was in manual mode, s and d were fine.

I've had my DSG R 14 months now and had about a dozen false neutrals, the worst being entering from a freeway on ramp at 80kms/hr, eased off the throttle then back on as I pulled onto the freeway and had no drive whatsoever with traffic bearing down on me, eventually when I knocked it back into D a couple of times it selected a gear, mentioned it at each service so far but still no fix......

You should get a technician to go with a drive with you and show him. I did, at least they tried to do something. Hopefully they fix it properly unlike mine when mine broke completely after several problems with the DSG.

I've gone around corners a couple of times in D or S and the car has completely slipped out of gear and the engine has just revved almost up to the redline because its in neutral, then I back off the throttle and wait a couple of seconds and it finds a gear again!

Scary.. Has happened about 3 times in total and ALWAYS around a corner for me, not spirited driving either.

It is amazing that my VW dealer claimed to have never heard of this problem with DSG, yet a Google search reveals the real story. It was not until I told them of my near death experience involving being t-boned by a B- double that they agreed to replace the mechatonics unit in my then MK V Golf GTI.

For more than 40,000kms after this, I had zero problems, so I just wonder why this problem is still being reported. You would think that VW would be able to identify the cause of the problem and do a "fix" at production stage.

I am a little nervous about my current MY11 Golf R DSG. Whilst I have had no "false neutrals", I have noticed an intermittent shudder in 1st gear at low speed.

THE_EGG, whilst those of us in the 6R polo area know of your issues, yours relate to a completely different gearbox altogether so while I know you're trying to help, probably not such a good idea making these guys worry just yet.

Your polo ran the 7spd, dry clutch dsg as fitted to low-powered golfs, the golf R runs a much stronger, wet clutch, 6 speed DSG that is of an older design (like the motor) that has been proven many many times over to withstand considerable torque loads. The false neutral is a known software related issue which can sometimes be related back to a dodgy mechatronics unit. Again, I know you're just trying to help but as I've said, the failings with your situation wasn't your gearbox directly but with the dealings with the dealership you dealt with.

Sorry mate, I just thought the false neutral was the same as what happened to my DSG. I just wanted to say to keep bugging the dealership or try another one because it could end quite badly (crash or totally broken DSG). And yes I do realise the DSG7 is the newer of the two and also realise the DSG6 is a lot better as it has been around for a long time (i think since 2003/2004?).

Yeah, no worries mate. Same issue on both boxes though, but hopefully different to your issue

My dealer also denied knowledge of it. I have had about 8 events in 12 months always in manual mode when getting slow so it tries to change down and ends up in neutral. You have to be quick to select D or S to get going again. I avoid manual mode when just tooling about in 50 zones. I have now changed dealers so will try this problem on the new dealer.
