  • GTi axle tramp under acceleration

I've started pushing the engine harder now that it has approx 5,000km on the clock, and I've noticed the GTi is very prone to axle tramp when the tyres slip under hard acceleration.

I had a Mk V 2.0 TDi before getting the Mk VI GTi, and I don't remember ever experiencing any axle tramp at all.

Is the Mk VI GTi really more prone to axle tramp than the Mk V TDi? Does this mean the TDI has harder engine mounts than the GTi?

Will the engine NVH be noticeably worse if I put harder engine mounts on the GTi?

I agree slam. I reckon especially in wet with hard acceleration that axle tramp is unpleasant. Judicious use of the right foot is required.

i rarely get any axle tramp on mine...

because Torque Arm Insert & WALK do work!

but the increased NVH is not everyone's cup of tea.

Is the increased NVH very obvious?

Any idea why the MkVI GTi axle tramps a lot more than my MkV 2.0 TDi? Does the 2.0 TDi have more rigid engine mounts, or is the MkVI more prone to axle tramps than the MkV for whatever reason?

Probably because the GTI has twice the power of the TDI

One of the good mods i have is BSH torque mount insert. Previously had the BFI 90a one but far too harsh for me, the BSH one you can hardly notice if at all any vibrations and wheel hop is gone. In the wet still get tramp but in the dry it improves alot!

It's not just power which makes the tyres break traction. The TDi has 14% more torque than the GTi (320 Nm vs 280Nm). This, combined with skinnier, smaller diameter and less grippy tyres made the TDi at least as easy to spin the tyres as teh GTi

Hey nat, are you still running the 1.4 Twincharged engine? APR only shows mounts for the 2.0l GTI so if you've got a suitable purchase link I'd be interested.

                Thanks

Ryan, I'm running the APR lower torque arm insert in my twincharge. Makes a huge difference!

Looks like I'll be visiting Volkspower this weekend, unless I have to order one in.

I think engine mounts are not for everyone.
I got the APR one on my old Polo GTI, and it was the worst thing I did.
The vibration on idle was very noticeable, and it was embarrassing turning the air-con on.

I know they're two different cars, but just be sure you need it I guess.
Maybe see if you can get someone to show you one that has an aftermarket mount installed?

So did you take if back off? Are there any specs as to how far to push it in, or how tight to do up the bolt that could have an impact on this?

I think I need to get one due to my cars' power output. I can definitely feel something in the engine move when I shift down gears in Manual mode (i.e. dropping from 5th to 3rd before a 90 degree corner in my street, not driving fast or anything).

I ended up leaving it on there.
But every time I turned the air-con on, I wish I had never got it.

I guess there's different engine mounts, with different levels of stiffness, so I guess it should be ok?
I dont know... just be careful! haha.

Sorry if this is a silly question - is the stiffness of the engine mount the only thing which influences the amount of axle tramp?

I haven't driven the Scirocco R so I don't know what it's like. But since it is also a FWD and the engine output is much higher than the standard GTi, does it mean that:

                            1) If the engine NVH levels in the Scirocco R are simlar to the GTi (implying similar stiffness in the engine mounts), then the Scirocco R will have a lot more axle tramp due to the higher engine output?

                            2) If the Scirocco R has the same amount or less axle tramp than the GTi, then the engine NVH levels must be a lot worse because the engine mounts are stiffer?

I'm still trying to work out why my MkV 2.0TDi didn't have any axle tramp at all, even though it was really easy to spin the tyres with 320Nm, whereas the MkVI GTi suffers from it really badly

no Ryan. traded the mk6 118tsi in december 2010 for a mk6 gti

the TAI for all mk6 should be the same i think.

                              this is what i got:
