    So I'm looking at removing my RCD510 to see if it has a video input for a retrofit RVC kit from ECS Tuning.

    Is there any precautions or things to look out for when I disconnect my battery?
    What settings can I expect to lose?
    What settings can I expect to have to set up when reconnecting the battery back? i.e radio stations, time, phonebook, the star/tool button on the roof etc..

    Make sure that;

    After disconnecting and reconnecting the battery, pinch protection of the power window regulators will not function. This can cause serious injuries if e.g. fingers are caught in the window!

    The following work sequence is for the front left window. The positioning for the remaining windows is performed in the same manner using the respective switch in the driver's door.
    Perform the following work sequence to position the electric windows:

    · Switch ignition on
    · Close all doors and windows completely
    · Hold left front side-window in position “Close” by pulling and holding switch for longer than 1 second.
    · Lift button again for 1 second. Now when the button is pressed briefly the window will lower fully and when the button is lifted briefly the window will raise fully.
    · Switch ignition off

      There's no real need to disconnect the battery — there's nothing you can short unless you're more than ordinarily hamfisted, and the cables are long enough to come through the dash when you pull the unit out.

        Awesome thanks for the info. Didn't know about the power windows.

        You are right Idle, there's probably no need now but when I get around to do the RVC install, this would be probably be required. So better to know now

          In addition to Transporter's note to reset the windows for pinch & basic settings.

          Disconnect the earth connector of the battery first when taking battery power off the Golf and isolating the battery.

          On reconnection:
          Reconnect the earth connection last.
          Check the clock.
          Not sure if the Australian GTi has ESP but if so, the steering sender needs to be re-activated. Done by driving off at 15 - 20 Km/H in a straight ahead straight line until the dash lamp extinguishes.
          Check all your other settings and electrical systems are working.

            Wouldn't the pinch protection thing fix itself through normal use? After I installed my camera I lost the feature where to window fully opens or closes by holding the switch for 1 sec (I don't carry passengers let alone kids so am not worried about pinching), but after a few trips and me having to hold the switches it eventually righted itself.

            Had to fix the clock as well, but surprisingly all other MDI settings (Coming home lights duration, Rain closing windows, Floor lighting %age, etc) were retained. Then again I should probably double-check Rain Closing works
            Some say he was the Stig... all we know is that he drives a VW Transporter.

              I just yanked my RCD510 out with the ignition off - takes 5 minutes or less Haven't tried putting it back in yet though. Probably never will... anyone want one? hehe

                I didn't need to disconnect the battery when I fitted my RVC — power to the hatch goes off when it's open and the only other part of the existing power wiring you monkey with is the fuse box.

                If, as I did with 100% success, you use a piggyback fuseholder (which can be found on Ebay UK, or you can make your own) instead of wiring in a new separate fuse that area is also safe to remain powered.
